Apparently the Finns are developing land based suicide drones now. This is the Laykka AMPGV. You strap some AT mines on it and drive towards the closest vehicle. The idea was to make it as low cost, low profile and as modular as possible. There are variants with four LAW launchers on it and drone launching variants in the works too. Is this an idea that has any potential?

Pic related is a prototype used in field trials where supposedly a handful of these were able to stop enemy mechanized forces.

              >painstakingly maintain staggered formation to make sure you get all the landmines so the rest of the column can advance safely

              >wonder why you even bother

It's gonna require careful concealment before the ambush, and skill on the operator's part. Otherwise the russians will solve the problem with pic related.

Like, I can already see this being the very first response to these being seen. Five or six guys piled on top of each tank, ready to shoot at anything that moves.

Of course the infantry protection can be removed with pic related just prior to the ambush.

from the size I can guess it will carry at most 100kg of rdx so leathal air blast of 10m shrapnel for 30m. can be useful.

If I had to guess the bigger one in the picture carries one of the Finnish new quasi-bouncing Betty type munitions that fire a submunition to about 20-30 meters height which then detonates like a claymore spraing an area of about 100 meters with ball bearings.

            Anonymous

this would get around the some treaties about the use of landmines. I swear ball bearings kill more people than their name suggests.

it'd probably be more economic to use the bmp to suicide charge the drone instead

Seems dumb compared to a missile or any other suicide drone. A rocket engine can't be that much more expensive then an electric motor, and something rolling on the ground seems like it would be much more trivial to defend against and less easy to deliver wherever you want something to die quickly.

You might be correct but there are some advantages to ground based suicide drones. A system like this can carry a significantly larger payload than anything but the largest of flying drones and you don't have to worry about flight time when loitering. Supposedly these things are made to be traverse almost any kind of terrain and go offroad and supposedly they worked well in snow during the winter as well. This isn't me saying that it is more or less valuable but it could at least hypothetically have some advantages.

        Anonymous

Only advantage I could see is if they were cheap enough to make that you could use them to be a self deploying minefield or other similar ambush settings where speed isn't as important as stealth and precision, but for any sort of combat setting, a glorified CoD killstreak C4 strapped to an RC car seems like a terrible idea. I guess it would be a possible evolution of those EFP mines where you could set it up to roll into a bush at the side of the road and detonate on an enemy convoy when it goes past, but beyond allowing you to deploy them out the back of your vehicle while you roll past, I don't see any massive gains.

It's also easier to automate land based drones than aerial drones

        (x)
One of the beauties about the sky is that there are nothing in the way the drone as to maneuver about nor worry about ground conditions. Something like this design where they don't even have big enough tires that they extend above and below the body would not be a simple system to guide to a target area through any sort of difficult terrain. There's a reason that we had guided missiles in the 80s and before, whereas land based autopilots are still not a mature tech.

Automating the travel to the specific destination is probably about the same difficulty. In the air you've got wind pushing you off course but can more easily correct with GPS, on the ground you've got physical barriers but can follow paths. Automating the target identification when direct control is jammed will be the trickier part. Shape-based identification from the air will surely be easier than from ankle height like the one in the OP though so I guess you're right.

            >wind pushing you off course

so this thing is an explosive UGV?
seems like a bad idea, airbourne drones can be faster and can come from any direction thats why they can hit enemy vehicles. with a ground vehicle you'd be getting stuck in foliage and even on a perfectly flat road you're not fast enough to avoid getting shot

For (you) and all the others going on about aerial drones, remember that this thing's being developed with a much narrower set of conditions in mind, namely the finnish eastern border. Which is endless forests and narrow roads everywhere.

The advantages this thing gets over aerial drones in those conditions is a) far greater endurance when loitering (a UAV will run down its batteries in tens of minutes, whereas this thing can sit around probably for hours), and b) greater payload (those AT mines are HEAVY). It's also harder for APS to spot and engage (radar physics 101 - a moving object against clear open sky is VERY visible while a stationary or slow-moving one on the ground needs tons of signal processing magic to pick out of the other clutter).

If your intention is to harass the enemy as they try to advance on a narrow road in the middle of nowhere, this thing is a damn good tool. Just have two or three guys deploy with these along the route between the larger ambushes. Let the vanguard through, then drive the drone up to the roadside and hit the command platoon as it rolls up behind them. Slip away and laugh as the enemy loses their shit, thinking they've driven into a minefield.

serious question but why aren't relays being used in ukraine or in the military to just remotely control shit like this or extend the range of drones
if you have the relay in the air you can just control the car drone, or you could install a starlink dish in the drone for cheap

I'm not sure what the benefits are over a missile. If you locate an enemy, sending this thing to destroy it seems way more complicated than shooting at it.

      Anonymous

Cheaper, larger payload relative to size, don't have to risk expensive launch platforms, can't be shot down by SPAAG / AAD, no jamming possible..

Now make it carry machine guns and have a attachment in the back that lets it pull a wagon behind it so you can haul ammo or wounded. Semi autonomous drones minded by individual operators will be far more common once we make useful land based robots for the infantryman.

Seems to me like these would make for a great fast, low manpower defense. Just drop of a container of these near where you expect the enemy to advance and drive them to concealed positions near the road etc.
