Anyone notice this weird narrative that Ukraine was right to surrender its nukes in 1994 because they somehow couldn't actually maintain or use the weapons? That's complete bullshit.

The entire production chain for the Soviet Satan-I ICBM was located in Ukraine. The missile was designed by Yuzhnoye Design Office and built by Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant in Dnipro. The guidance computers controlling Soviet ICBMs were designed and manufactured in Kharkiv by Ukrainians (Electropribor/Khartron). Fissile material could have been enriched at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

In fact, Russia literally needed Ukrainians to help maintain its fricking nuclear arsenal in 2006.

The Ukrainians were unironically the brains of the Soviet Union.

Ukraine didn't have the PAL codes, meaning that all of their existing weapons were useless. They would have had to completely rebuild the arsenal with their own PAL codes in order to have a nuclear deterrent.

They could literally just rip out the computers they designed and rework it so they had new PAL codes. They designed and built the damn systems.

Oh, look! We have a nuclear missile scientist here to tell us all about how it exactly works. So simple a vatnik could do it!

When you have complete documentation for a system, you can design a workaround for any safety system you've designed. And btw, there was research in 1993 on this exact question, some silos even got rewired to be controlled from Kyiv instead of moscow, but sadly, due to pressure both from USA and russia, we had to give up not only nukes, but strategic aviation too. Which is a fricking crime if you ask me, beautiful, only few years old planes, brutally cut to pieces. The tour guide at Kyiv aviation museum, a former pilot himself, said that many crews cried when their plane was cut

Soviet nuclear weapons were designed to fail-deadly, not fail-safe. They wanted to be sure they'd go off even if codes were lost, even if EMP interfered with communication. Code keys are very much a Western nuclear weapons design feature. The Russians didn't believe in them, especially not for the tactical nuclear artillery shells that were 95% or more of the stuff Ukraine had.

        >Soviet nuclear weapons
Instead of safety and ignition switch soviet nukes had two ignition switches.

      >not having codes means you can
      >never hack 60s USSR tech
      >never break the locks
      >never retrofit new computers
      moron ALERT

The codes are only there to stop a rogue commander from launching nukes.
How exactly do you think the codes are set?

      >the launch code prevents you from taking the physical warhead and wiring it up with new controls
      huh

do you think the plutonium just sits there waiting for you to input the correct key sequence before it decays or something

It was money. You know how the US spends more on nuclear maintenance than Russia's entire military budget, so we wonder how much if their shit is actually functional? Ukraine's a far more poor country than Russia, especially back then they were also full of chaotic corruption like a lot of former Soviet states. Keeping up a nuclear arsenal and/or making sure nothing funny happened probably wasn't in the cards.

You get very little out of a dollar in US compared to Russia and/or China.

The arsenal could've been severely reduced, it was bigger than a Chinese one.

that's quite the understatement, considering it was like 4-6 times the size

Ukraine was/is full of millions of vatniks and Western leadership didn't want to risk them linking up with russia again with a full arsenal.

Don't shoot the messenger, just pointing out what no one can say. Also, before anyone gets the wrong idea from this, systematic extermination of all russoids isn't genocide because being russian is a choice.

So instead they give the nukes directly TO said russians? Infallible logic, anon

Ukraine was de-nuked by US and their stock of strategic bombers and icbm's was destroyed under US supervision and in many cases by US companies.

Girkin is b***hing today that UAF damaged an An-124 at Bryansk with drones overnight because they only have 55 and "production cannot be resumed." Yes, Igor, because production took place outside Kyiv lel

The issue was mostly financial. That industry takes billions and doesn't earn shit. If they made oil, computers, cars or something else that could finance it - OK. Otherwise it's net drain.

And selling nuclear tech is a big no. You ever wonder how the middle east and other shithokes are loaded with AKs, T-55s, MIGs and other soviet weapons when they barely can build houses? Ukraine sold most of its soviet weaponry in 90s.
