Every source ive seen says 1:9 is great for 55gr to 62gr. Thats the most common ammo available.

I only worry about not having a twist for common ammunition, because in the event that I need ammo, and cant just go out and buy it, I dont want to be stuck scavenging for more rare ammo like 77gr.

There is no accuracy penalty for shooting 55gr out of 1:7 vs 1:9

You would need a bench rest and a micrometer to detect any difference at all.

That's the main pain in the ass, yes. Then you need a torque wrench and so forth. It's impossible IMHO to frick up on a lower, and can do it with tools you have lying around the garage. The same is emphatically not true for assembling an upper using a stripped barrel -- dimpling the barrel for the set screws on the gas block, etc. -- and newbies need to be aware of that. I am not shitposting. I am trying to help.

            >Then you need a torque wrench and so forth
no you don't, torque spec is 30 to 80 lbs, the reason for the wide range is that you need to index the barrel nut so the gas tube slips through one of the grooves
there is no need for a torque wrench, just tighten the barrel nut until the holes line up and install your gas tube
if you can't tell what 30-80ft lb feels like, you should just stop doing anything related to anything mechanical or gun

              Anonymous

God damn it, most DON'T. Nor do they have drill presses to correctly prep the barrel to install a non-shitty gas block. It is not within easy reach of your average postmodern American, mechanically or skillwise. Putting together a lower is like building a plastic model of a battleship, except with springs and pins and shit. Building an upper off a stripped barrel is not and you know it and newbies need to know this so they won't waste their money.

That's all I'm going to beat the topic for.

yeah i fricked up the first 2 times i tried to pin a barrel myself
it's tricky for sure, you need an undrilled front sight or an end mill and lots of skill and patience, and of course a taper reamer

                Anonymous

How much experience did you have fitting gun parts and making things in general before that? I'm currently tempted by two uppers, one new and yet to be available, but neither come with barrels. However, with no taper reamer, no usable drill press, and only hand tools (of course also things like electric hand drills), I suppose I should just wait for the complete gun to be sold and throw surplus furniture on it, and in the meantime, buy a little surplus here and there. On the other hand, knowing how to put together an upper isn't a bad skill to have. I just worry about canting my sight like a moron.

Why are there so many of these threads every day now?

1:9 twist barrel or A1/A2 threads? Because the A1/A2 threads are probably from the lack of new available 20" barrels and especially new carry handle uppers available. The used market is fricked on those.

not very that was a while ago but it's still hard
if you had an undrilled FSP it's not hard, if you have a FSP that's already drilled, i would say don't even bother honestly

Fun fact. Grains are not what determines what length of twist you need to stabilize a projectile. It's the length of the bullet. Now those are usually directly correlated, but not always. Which is why you can fire a very light solid copper projectile and not have it overstabilized because its dimensions are the same. Or conversely, you might make an incredibly heavy DU bullet, but not need to have a tighter twist ratio because the bullets relatively short.
