in a lot of districts cops have very low bars to qualify. They very rarely are forced to practice any short of fast drawing and shooting, which is what a lot of the gunfights they are in, which means when they're actually put in those situations they panic more

The reality of a gunfight is there's a lot of movement and sometimes no time to get a perfect grip on your gun. Glocks fail when the user is moving or not perfectly gripping their gun. They might seem fine under the ideal circumstances of a range (they're not, I've seen and had more failures with Glocks than anything else) but on the field they're proving to not function properly. Some officers have died on video with jammed up Glocks. That's enough of a counter selling point that I'll never buy one.

Glocks are as reliable as any autoloader which is less reliable than a revolver. The trade off is capacity which you need to employ a handgun in an offensive role. Anyone not paid to carry a gun who only requires a handgun for a defensive role needs to seriously consider how much time they will devote to malunction remediation drills before deciding to bet their life on an autoloader.
I contend that the probability of your auto jamming is higher than the probability you will need more than 6 rounds to resolve a defensive gun use. Feeling like you need 87 rounds in a defensive gun just seems like a cope for people who know that don't train enough and have zero confidence in their ability to make quality hits under pressure.

NTA but although it's a bit inflammatory, I agree with your post. I will just say one thing about revolvers in terms of "reliability." Revolvers do have some pitfalls (besides the obvious lack of capacity) that the undertrained shooter can fall victim to, mainly riding the reset causing the mechanism to bind up, and bindup caused by fouling (because let's face it, most people do not clean their guns). The latter I have not personally experienced, but my revolver instructor insists he's seen it during his time as a DEA agent when they were issued revolvers.
When people talk about reliability, they tend to only think about mechanical reliability when what really matters is reliability of the whole system (the mechanical system in the hands of a given user). Both systems have pitfalls and it's a shame there's any kind of mystique around either of them, whether it be "muh revolver won't jam like your auto" or "muh auto outguns your revolver." For a given situation (either LE or civilian) the principal issue at play is training.

Most people don't shoot their guns either anon. If a revolver jams it's usually due to abuse, neglect or outright parts breakage. Most common auto jams are impossible for a revolver, and while easily remedied with proper remediation the people who will put in the time to achieve the appropriate skill level is very small.

Maybe it's because I had to wait so long to own a gun (came from a 2A shithole and had to move before my permit even got close to approval) but it bothers me very much to see people so nonchalant about it. Yes, this is the way I see it too. If you're willing to put in time to train with the gun, an automatic pistol is better. If you're not (and most people, including most cops, aren't), then a revolver will do you better.

I cannot think of a single situation where you come out unscathed after taking the time to shoot 10+ rounds. If you're shooting, you're a couple seconds from injury or death. The first 3 shots you take are probably all you're going to get before you take a hit yourself. That's why getting effective hits is so important.

I know it’s a cop and that’s different than regular people, but it’s a shootout with one cop and one suspect where the cop fired 33 rounds and the moron shot 21. He even hit the redguard 14 times before he dropped, so it’s not like he was a terrible shot. This was all in less than a minute.

My biggest advice for anyone that carries a handgun is "get something you will carry every single day". Having a gun is the most important part of winning a fight. If having a 20 round mag is something that makes you want to carry that gun more, get that.
As for the shooting story, it's VERY important to remember that cops have different priorities in shootings. As a non-cop, your concern is to get out of the situation as soon as possible. There is no reason to get into a prolonged gunfight. Cops have to control the situation and don't have the luxury of retreating, so it makes a ton of sense for them to bring 45+ rounds with them.

I agree which is why I even mentioned same size and weight with more capacity. A LCP is significantly smaller and lighter than a j frame while holding 2 more rounds. The LCP max has 6 more. And no .38 spl isn’t that much better than .380.
A hellcat is 0.3” and 0.2” shorter in length and height. Width is weird because of cylinder vs slide. It is 3oz heavier (more when loaded) but is 11+1 vs 5.

I watch a lot of PoliceActivity and it was surprising to me how often I was seeing Glocks jam. Its not like I went out of my way to search for them, I was just watching their videos in a linear fashion as they released.
Now it could be a unique set of factors that seems to cause it, somewhere between limp wristing (from being surprised/not ready for the engagement), to lack of proper maintenance, to modified guns, to weapon lights affecting recoil characteristics.
It's almost always a compromised grip or hand/ thumb behind the slide. People in high level shooting competitions would not be using glock/m&p if they were unreliable. They also aren't fighting for their lives.

I am of the opinion that 90% of cop Glocks sit around in holsters for most of their entire life. They're rarely serviced, handled, cleaned, lubricated. I think that's where a lot of these malfunctions come from. In this case though he's clearly wrapping his hand around the back of the slide and limp wristing. This does lend credence to the idea that this gun is rarely handled because it clearly isn't being trained on.

Years ago back home, I bought a glock 20, it was a jam-o-matic. I tried different ammo, different springs, longer slide. I converted it to a 6" barrel and slide with a stiffer stainless steel spring and just kept firing magazine after magazine until it was smoking and the it stop jamming. Now it runs smooth with no issues and I feel comfortable with it as a go to. Kops need to fire their weapon enough to know it is broken in, tuned up, lubed, and reliable, but most kops are stupid.
