I hit a Zercher deadlift PR the other day.

I never do PR or Max, I just up the resistance band after every month until I can do till failure explosive reps. Might be why I havent grown in size but I have insane cardio though.

Nice but, I do almost everything but deadlift. Shit would only snap my back. I like barbell squats. I think I moved to doing kettlebell underleg swings as a replacement for deadlift to engage my glutes

        Anonymous

I have the opposite philosophy. I do stuff like zerchers and one handed deadlifts because I want my body to be strong in as many ranges of motion as possible and I figure the best way to prevent snapmaxxing is to strengthen the parts of my body that people tell me to avoid using.

Ya we just have a different goal, plus it sounds like you're getting strong, I am just trying to get lean. Down from 230 to l87, probably going to get down to 175 maybe? and then just work on overall body composition instead of looking at the scale. As far as intensity I do go to failure every gym day and I have been adding weight slowly through the year. It's probably way less that what I can push.

I love zercher grip but I had to stop doing deadlifts. Every variation of grip and attempt at changing up my form seemed to do nothing. I felt like I was on the verge of snap city the whole time but could never discover the reason why.

Oh no, I was making progress but my back was becoming increasingly sore on the small of my back. I tried longer rest times, a greater focus on exercises to strengthen my back, different grips and getting several people to spot me and coach my form. Nothing helped with the pain so I figured I probably actually have a pre existing back problem and the best thing I can do is focus on other exercises because I don't want to end up with chronic pain.

      >have a heart attack

Does switching to zercher for a while have much chance of improving your normal deadlift?

I've been stalled at 177.5kg for a while and even a placebo to help hit 4plate would be great, never tried zercher

        Anonymous

NTA but I'd be surprised. Imo the best way to break through plateaus is to play around with intensity and training volume.
        >Doing 5 or 3 reps/set? Try dropping down to doubles or singles and seeing if that let's you up the weight. Or deload and increase reps up 8+
        >Working each body part twice a week? Change up your program to hit each body part once or three times a week instead.
        >Rest more between sets or rest less between sets. Whatever.

I've also found that adding some additional cardio on non-lifting days can help. Sure, a single PR lift is almost entirely anaerobic but unless your entire set is complete within 6 seconds, there's going to be a significant aerobic component. Similarly, aerobic fitness affects how well you recover between sets, that affects the total amount of work you can do per gym session, and that affects muscle growth.

        Anonymous

I'm not sure, I did zerchers off and on leading up to hitting 4pl8 but I maintained a steady regimen of 1 working set of 5 reps a week for conventional deadlift, periodized in a 6 week wave progression of 70/80/90/75/85/95% of my 1RM, and hit it after roughly 9 months of steady lifting. I did notice that zerchers improved my resilience to back pain and injury though, since I started doing them I've had none of either and I hit my 4pl8 lift both without a belt and with some serious back rounding.

I don't consider injecting myself with roids as being any healthier than downing a big mac or a pizza everyday. Talk about cardio or frick off.

Muscle strength and resistance training are strongly associated with reductions in all-cause mortality, obesity and cardiovascular risk.
Sure, jumping on the roids is unhealthy and, yeah, an "optimal" fitness program will include both cardio and resistance but pretending someone who is big and looks good is automatically unhealthy is fricking moronic. I can only assuming you're trying to cope with the fact that you're fat or skinnyfat by telling yourself "that guy might be bigger and better looking than me but it's okay because he's actually just as unhealthy" but sadly bros, that ain't true.
      >In a study of over 1 million men, low strength at age 18 was associated with a 1.45x risk heart failure later in life.
Combined aerobic and resistance training was better for aerobic fitness than aerobic training alone, and resistance training alone had a similar effect on measures of cardiovascular risk as aerobic training alone.
      >Resistance training alone is associated with 20% lower all-cause mortality, combined resistance training and aerobic exercise is associated with 40% lower all-cause mortality.

doesn't mean you can't calorie deficit max, also try steps, just do it slowly but still to failure. If you do that for 30/45 minutes a day, maybe in 15minute sessions, you are stopping your body from being a potato which is devastating to your health. If not steps, maybe a stationary row machine or bike.

Fellow backlet here (L4-L5, L5-S1). Here's what worked for me:

      >BRACE BRACE BRACE
Always brace. Even for little things like reaching for the TP or tying your shoes.
      >swimming
Does wonders to keep you active no matter how fricked up you are. I'll limp my way to the pool if I have to.
      >losing weight
Every lb counts. BMI 25 should be your absolute limit.
      >deadhangs to decompress your spine
      >wear shoes that fit
Pretty much rules out anything that's not corny-ass looking NBs unless you're willing to get something custom made or shop around a lot.
If you manage to find something nice off-the-rack that agrees with your anthropometry I'd suggest getting at least two pairs. If they're really comfy (you can wear them for 6+ hours w/o causing flareups) I'd seriously consider going full autismo and getting enough pairs to last you a lifetime.

      Once you're better:
      >walking
Preferably on a dirt track. Avoid rucking or any kind of load. Keys+goyphone is more than enough.
      >find a way to strengthen your core without snapping your shit
Mcgill Big 3 is the gold standard. Sprinting is pretty safe, once you can handle that. BW lunges are good too.
For me it's hanging leg raises/knee tucks but they definitely put a good amount of stress on your back. Incredible abs gainz though.

      >avoid normalgay exercises like crunches, supermen, russian twists, etc.
Twisting motions specially will frick you up. Supermen put a gorillion tons of pressure on your lower back for negligible core development.

      tl;dr:
      >brace
      >daily movement+mcgill big 3
      >don't be a tubby boy
      >boomer shoes

Be honest with me though OP, when you made this thread were you really genuinely trying to encourage people to start exercising and improve their health or was it just a way to feel superior? From the tone of your post it could go either way.
Still, there are no doubt a lot of fat fricks (or skinny, sedentary weaklings) on this board that could do with the reminder to look after their body. Improving your fitness improves your quality of life in so many ways and no man should let themselves die without seeing what their body is capable of.

I'd like to see this thread be more that people just replying "yes" and jerking themselves off for being fit. Seems like we could get something more productive happening here.

      This honestly.
      >Go to gym.
      >Exercise until muscle failure is reached via repeated sets of 10-15 repeated actions where you hold weights or do it for a long period of time.
      >Leave.
The "suffering" is spending the hour or so in a humid, sweaty room sharing well-used equipment with a bunch of other sweaty men. The room is nearly always barebones, and is slightly too full of people that you have to awkwardly avoid because this isn't a social space.
It's good to exercise anons, but every single time I've told myself I should gym, I realized those places were fricking miserable, and unless you're specifically wanting to develop your body, you should take up more fun exercise like a sport.

Just buy some gym equipment for your home. It’ll be cheaper in the long run anyways

Why suffer at all? Take the skinnyPill, no need to lift heavy or become heavy. Size doesn't mean shit over shot placement

I'm not American, and since I don't go to the range anymore or go hunting I can't legally own one. But I'd totally get a shotgun if it was legal, or an old flintlock pistol just because they look cool.

I own one, going to inherit another one, and I actually need one or a couple more.
I'm slightly obese, not enough to be recognised by medics (no benefits from that, just a note in the medical record).
I walk a lot, sometimes I exercise, and I actually want to go hunting soon.Gotta get a license and spend a day chasing hares.
