Annexations backfiring

Now that Ukraine has attacked and taken "Sovereign Russian Territory" without anything happening, does that mean that they can take Crimea without any fear of consequences?

      you answered your own question.

If Putin wants to win do the following:

      1. send a 30 minute warning to Zelensky that complete surrender is required or "atomic consequences" will ensue
      2. Nuke Lviv with the biggest bomb(s) they have. Fallout should not affect Russian troops in the theater.
      3. Give another 12 hours for complete surrender.
      4. Nuke Mykolaiv. Russian forces should have time to avoid radiation exposure.
      5. another 24 hour warning for Kiev to make a decision
      6. Nuke Kiev, Dnipro, Kryvvi Rih.
      7. If there's anyone left to surrender, accept the surrender.

the US isn't the only country although the most important. there are also countries like poland which might make an independent decision to strike russia

is russia then going to nuke them all?

the US is also expected to be a leader, not responding would damage its position and also encourage china to go for taiwan and threaten nukes

when the rubber hits the road the eastern European NATO bloc and Taiwan would be sacrificed, ain't no America going to die for those people NATO is a paper alliance unless Russia simply launches a Ukraine-style attack on a current NATO member. The stakes are clear there.

Just running basic game theory and Bayesian probability a Russia nuke strike on Ukraine would not be met with any decisive response, and would likely turn the tide of the war decisively and cement Putin as a figure in history as famous/notorious as anyone else, ever.

He is probably salivating at his options at this point given his and Russia's mentality and sense of place in history. This is a country that fought two huge world wars and led a global millenarian movement (Communism) that most Russians have some fondness for.

not if Russia nukes Ukraine. Petraeaus and Clark are already out in public saying that the US would attack Russia with conventional forces but not nuclear weapons.

Once that happens, Russia with either take the licking or will face a tough decision to also nuke the US forces or their bases in Europe.

The US would only use conventional forces because that is all they would need. The country that has the largest amount to lose from using a nuclear weapon in Ukraine is Russia. Putin knows this.

and then we're back at square one, Russia suffering a humiliating defeat or launching the nukes and ending it once and for all.

The difference between this crisis and the Cuban Missile Crisis is back then, both sides had an optimistic view that their countries would one day triumph and bring light to the world civilization.

Putin's Russia is a humiliated cornered animal much more like Hitler or the Japs in WW2. It's a complete different and more dangerous scenario.

Actually, game theory says the only rational response would be total retaliation. Anything short of that risks universal proliferation and the routine use of nuclear weapons. If this occurs, over the long term, the chances of a full-blown nuclear war becomes 100% anyway, where as an immediate strike only *risks* escalating into a full-scale war.

I would agree with you if I believed every person in power were rational people who study game theory. But on the world stage we've seen that almost every single country's leadership will say "Not my problem" and push it off to the generation under them. In 25 years we'll be seeing nuclear detonations over Palestine and people will be crying about what should have been done now to stop it. You'll live to see it. That's a prophecy.

Russia has shown itself to have a military that is simply incapable of fighting NATO conventionally. They probably couldn't even occupy a totally nuked out Europe at this point. They will take a generation long pause after taking Ukraine and the frontlines will permanently stabilize.

nuclear winter is extremely real if there's an all-out exchange. 2,000+ nukes would cause a 3-5 year temperature drop of approximately 40F and destroy crop yields across all mid-latitude countries. Likely a 95 percent death rate in US, Europe and Russia, and 50 percent elsewhere.

Maybe some tactical nukes on military targets, but even that is unlikely. That would push India and China against them. Not to mention US conventional military response wiping out the rest of their heavy weapons near Ukraine, but they dont care about that too much, they know their military is defeated and shitty already.

It is well established that there is no difference. The US says they'll eliminate the black sea fleet and establish a No Fly Zone if tactical nukes are fired simply because it's impolitic to say out loud that the Black Sea Fleet will be destroyed as part of our first strike option, along with every fleet Russia sails, and that the "No-Fly Zone" is going to stretch from Lviv to Vladivostok.

Modi and Xi Jinping meeting and then both agreeing to publicly denounce the invasion of Ukraine represnets the most terrifying possiblity to the Russians, which is China and India losing faith in Russia as a partner, and thinking that associating with Russia bring more harm than it does good. Both India and China feel that Russia is a failed state and will now side with the US over Russia, which is more or less the end state for Russia. And I'd bet that US diplomats have worked out a deal with China that in exchange for their intervention in a scenario where Russia uses tac nukes in Ukraine, they would get handed the entirety of eastern Siberia as a tradeoff.

China doesn't even really support Russia. The hopium is that China will give them thousands of tanks, drones and other equipment and China knows if it does it'll be fricked worse than the 'profit' they'll make. Russia doesn't offer anything to them bar cheap gas and oil, which is even cheaper and will get cheaper as this goes on. They have an invested interest for Russia to get fricked. Besides, they have a treaty with Ukraine to defend them if a nuclear weapon is used on them (technically they're suppose to get involved if even a threat is made, but they won't). Not that I expect the backstabbing Chinese to honour it (just like Hong Kong bullshit multiple times in the last 30 years) to honour it if it happens BUT if they don't, goodbye to goodwill and trust from Belt & Road when people see China doesn't honour its treaties.

      >Modi and Xi Jinping meeting and then both agreeing to publicly denounce the invasion of Ukraine represnets the most terrifying possiblity to the Russians
"There are no upper limits to military cooperation between our countries."

The Cold War never ended, and the basis for the Sino-Soviet 'split' is as apocryphal as Joseph Smith's golden tablets. The only out is if The Party determines the joint first strike horseshit will be their suicide, and backstabbing the Russians so as to gobble up the Eastern Military District in the ensuing balkanization is an acceptable consolation prize to not getting their coveted Lower 48 lebensraum. All parties in this are evil and moronic beyond belief, so anything is possible.

India's double dealing will end with zero factories heading their way fleeing China. And that's a good thing. No one believes they don't seriously know about the Good Cop Bad Cop routine played in Pakistan between the Russians and Chinese (and the strictly Anglo redundancy outside the Quad shows that).
