Hunters back then werent selective cause they didnt have hunting rules and didnt care if the animal died immediately or not from the shot.

Americans are fucking dumb, hunting regulations came about in the 1930s when every dumb fuck with a rifle went out into the woods and almost caused white tail deer to go extinct.
Because, you know, the great depression.

        https://i.imgur.com/nS3apIS.jpg

That was done by the US Government to make Native Americans more reliant on US welfare/Aid.
Too bad it didnt work and good thing people brought back the Bison.

the desire to drop it quickly and the fact that a long range shot is quite likely in it's habitat. shooters are going to use the best rifle available for the job, and if these magnum centerfire rifles with high end optics were around 200 years ago, they'd be highly sought after.

Modern people are gays. If you can't take on a bear with a spear, you shouldn't be hunting it. If you can't kill a bison with arrows, have a nice day instead. There's nothing sporting or impressive about obliterating some animal from a stand 300 yards away.

Wrong. Man's natural weapon is his intellect and ability to create. It is only natural for man to dominate beast with the best weapons he can. There is nothing more manly than dropping your prey before it even knows it is being hunted.

don't make dumb blanket statements and then backpedal like that.

anyway, do you think trophy hunters just throw the meat away? or are you mixing them up with the fags that just herd animals and go on a canned hunt? how many trophy hunters do you think exist around the world? the vast majority of hunters see it as a hobby and have a great personal investment in preserving nature, caring for the quarry and making personal use of at least all the meat.
you sound like the low test fag here, and like a poorly informed one too

            >do you think trophy hunters just throw the meat away?

Ain't nobody out here eating bear, lion, coyote, etc. And a lot of people don't eat their deer or bison either. I know way too many Bubbas who just go out to get a big buck head for the wall or bear skin for the floor and never do anything else.

            >or are you mixing them up with the fags that just herd animals and go on a canned hunt?
Doesn't matter if it's you and Jimbo in your state park looking for a deer, or chasing a fox with dogs. Anyone who hunts non-human animals with a gun for sport is a gay. Full stop.

            >how many trophy hunters do you think exist around the world?
Too many, but I propose that this be solved by them hunting each other.

I love hunting, I love fishing, I love guns and firearms, When I was a kid, first time I ever did a shoot competition I won second place.
I think hunting is a little gay, you can buy meat at farms and stores, unless it's a way to feed yourself because you're poor or something or used to cull populations while feeding yourself, family and others hunting is kinda lame.
That being said, No, the objective of hunting is NOT to cause suffering to an animal and you can get kicked off hunting grounds for causing unnecessary harm to game animals.
I'm from Canada though so I dunno about mutt shartmart land.

right, that's what i'm saying moron!
so you blast your prey with a high Pk round, not a spear, not a broadhead arrow. the latter are truly extremely viable but require a higher level of skill and have much smaller margins, increasing your chance of a bad kill. the end product is also of a lower quality. all in all, inconsistent with ethical hunting.

One of the most grisly wounds i've ever seen was a .50 musket, I wouldn't discount them. The bones tend to shatter when hit by something that large rather than ice-picking through.

Look Animals are dumb, but not that fucking dumb.
One of the big things is that animals have also changed their patterns over the past 100 years.
Elk for example will roam everywhere, but come opening day as soon as the first few get tagged they all start moving to known safe areas.
I know a town near me that gets absolutely flocked with elk during hunting season since they don't allow hunting inna city.
So it is now just much easier instead of trying to find a stupid one you just drop one that never had a clue.

You know that anything over 300 pounds is literally immune to anything below 30 caliber right? Once the 300 pound threshold is surpassed, the carbohydrates immediately fuse into ballistic armor. The organs also shift, moving to the position maximally far from the skin. The skull changes from calcium phosphate to a partially reduced iron alloy similar to steel deposited there by the blood.

    >Also they have persistent psychological inadequacy about their masculinity, but we have to pretend that this is not relevant in cartridge selection

There aren’t as many of them, people want rifles that will ensure a human and quick kill. I also suspect it might’ve been easier to find/approach them when there were sixty gorillion of them around (see first point)

At the lower end, lol. US Civil War muskets were typically .64 cal, and matchlock muskets from the English Civil War typically .72 cal. Retard OP has a video game tier idea that newer = more damage.

Marketing. People think they need to buy the biggest magnum they can barely shoot because they've been lead to believe that elk are armor plated. They also barely know anything about how bullets actually kill, and choose one that will create the smallest permanent wound cavity you can get in an expanding bullet.

Hawkin rifles in 50 caliber, with a stout rifle charge of black powder, could deliver foot pounds of energy into a target comparable to modern hunting cartridges.

The difference is effective range, not necessarily power. Cartridges like .308 and even .30-06, simply don’t have the ability to deliver the amount of energy desired at the ranges Elk are often hunted at. Hunters in the West today regularly take Elk at 500-700 yards over open terrain. In the era of BP, the ability to make such shots with open sights, and the insanity that is black powder ballistics, made that style of hunting very difficult.

Most black powder hunting was done at what would be considered extremely close range today. The primary skill in hunting wasn’t really shooting, but rather in getting as close to an animal as you could.

Deer and elk were literally stupider back then. The only deer alive today at those descended from thirty generations of fuckers paranoid enough to avoid getting shot. Modern deer even have different skulls than they did a century ago because the proliferation of deer stands has put huge selection pressure on vertical vision. Deer that don't have upwards peripheral vision now get killed by hunters in droves. For most of history, looking up was a meme.
