And how, exactly, does Poland intend to pay for all this? That's an awful lot of toilets to clean.

With money. I know it's a hard concept to grasp for a Russian, but countries actually have money to pay for things.

It's not 1990 anymore. Question is why would Poland buy Abrams when they get K2?

          >It's not 1990 anymore. Question is why would Poland buy Abrams when they get K2?
Well, first the basic tank hull design hasn't changed all that much from 1980, you look at an M4 Sherman and an M60 Patton and there is a huge generational gap, the K2 doesn't really offer anything substantial that the Abram's can't handle with upgrades. Then second the Abram's already exist, you don't have to pay for them to be built, just modernized. A K2 tank from scratch is going to be a lot more expensive.

It's literally two variants of the same MBT.

Leopards 2 : got a lot of them for free from Germany, currently causing logistical issues because of being in a4 and a5 variants and PL modification lagging behind, will either end up in Ukraine/storage/somewhere in the west of Poland if full number of K2s is not ordered
      >M1A2 SEPV3 - heavy tank tank to be paired with heavy IFV, intended for a heavy division that will be the main armored fist of the army
      >K2, hopefully K2PL - not as heavy as Abrams, can be widely used without having to rebuild every bridge in Poland and should work better than Abrams in swampier areas like north east, to be paired with a Borsuk IFV which can swim

      q
Polish two diferent MBT's policy sort of makes sense as they have had it for half a century now.
You can basically have two lineages here, divided by the number of crewmembers:
      4-man: T-55, Leopard 2, Abrams
      3-man: T-72, K2

Honestly I think they over-corrected when Russia invaded Ukraine by quite a bit. Modernizing their military is a smart idea but for a country their size I don't see them needing say more than 300-400 tanks, 50-100 MLRS systems, 100-200 SPG's, 50-60 Apache's and maybe 600-750 IFV's. On Planes, yeah the mix of F-35's, F-16's and F/A-50's totaling about 150 seems pretty on point.
Realistically that alone could handle the remnants of the Russian army as it stands right now. Combine that with the militaries of the EU backing them and their US NATO allies and its such a curb stomp it isn't even funny.
They absolutely should modernize over the next 5-10 years but this plan is biting off a bit more than they should chew.

I think it's more of a political decision rather than a military one, though it is a good military decision to modernize.

Considering that Russia has made it clear that Poland would next after Ukraine. Suddenly dumping honestly a bit more than we can really afford on military is an importal signal. Both for Russia which if it has 2 braincells left in it's entire goverment should realize that Poland ain't fricking around when it comes to Russia and WILL do everything to protect itself just like Ukraine, acting as deterrent.
And the same signal is sent to our allies, where they know that supporting us just like Ukraine is not just donating money and equipment to the Russians with extra steps. But actually something you can rely on us using to actually defend ourselves.
And also we have been modernizing our military for a while and the progress wasn't that great honestly. A war next door is the PERFECT engine for political will to modernize and size up the army which might not be there for too much longer assuming how the Ukraine war goes.

They will be subsidized and everybody will be happy. Because they are the meatshield now. Funny thing is that after this round of shopping is complete, Poland alone will likely be able to defeat Russia in conventional conflict.

Woah woah hang on, I was told Ukraine could beat Russia with conventional arms like a year ago. Maybe if we want this done we'll have to do it ourselves

Doubts about the possibility of financing the modernization of the Polish armed forces are a recurring theme in Russian propaganda about Poland. It's quite interesting. This topic causes a lot of frustration in Russia for some reason. And it is enough to compare the economies of Russia and Poland. Polish GDP is half of Russia's. And the planned army is quantitatively 10 times smaller than the Russian one. In addition, almost no planned navy, strategic air force, nuclear weapons, etc.

Poland is still clearly poorer than most Western European countries, but it is not a poor country on a global scale. No one wonders how Israel maintains such a good armed forces with a GDP equal to half of Poland's.
Russian trolls should probably be more worried about their ass.
