      It's great

The AK74 has a slight edge
But both are great guns, i do with America had invented the AK and 5.45x39 though

          Why?
The 74 has less recoil than the AR and a lighter cartridge

because it's shit and inferior to 5.56, just like the ak is inferior to the ar

        wrong for the reasons

It's a sweet ass fricking gun, the M16A1 itself was a culmination of some extremely genius minds contributing some extremely genius ideas. Melvin Johnson, Eugene Stoner, Bob Fremont, Jim Sullivan, to name just some, and more brilliant people get involved as time goes.
If I were to criticize it, it would be that today, the M4A1 and M16A4 have a stupid dead weight barrel profile which could be replaced with just about any other style, which would offer some improvement. Oh yeah, and the three round burst on the M16A4 is pretty awful, auto or bust.

        Arguably, yes.

Is it true the Military Industrial Complex fricked around with the M16 on purpose because it was going to replace the M14, the MIC's baby?

          Anonymous

Depends on how you look at it.
The idea to omit chrome and cleaning kits, and to recycle powder which was actually unsuitable, could either have been Army Ordnance's idea, or McNamara's, the patron saint of bean counters. Either way, the rifle was fricked with.

Yes, they told the soldiers the rifle was self cleaning and also the wrong powder

Jamming a short-stroke piston into an AR15 makes it an inbreed between its close relative, the AR18. If you want a piston gun with radial locking lugs, what you're looking for is some sort of AR18 derivative such as the SCAR, not this homosexualry.

Direct Impingement was a bad decision, there’s a reason why no other gun outside of the AR15 uses it and everyone nowadays are getting the 426

              >Those are all non-issues or things that got fixed
lmao no. You can't get around the carrier tilt without changing the action entirely by adding guiderods or making it long-stroke, and the locking lugs are inherently weaker because you don't have gas pushing onto the bolt from the other side to make up for the pressure coming back, they're just more stressed and this can't be avoided without making them larger (ergo not fitting).
Overgassing could be fixed with a properly adjustable gasblock, but you don't get one, so you either get the gun kicking more than it needs to for no reason, or suppressed mode, which won't cycle without a suppressor.

              >there’s a reason why no other gun outside of the AR15
              >"AR15 clones don't count"
Cope. Piston ARs are for gullible morons.

every top Operator that gets a choice chooses AR, and don't know of any that don't choose M4.

      Anonymous

Western operators use ARs since they train with US guys who use ARs, and a SHARED platform is more important than any differences between platforms could ever be. Russian operators, who do get to choose their own gear, mostly run heavily modified AKs. Because they train with people who use AKs and the shared platform is more important than any advantages that could be had by switching.

    A1 or a2?

      Anonymous

For that rifle in particular, an A1 would be more accurate. You can tell my looking at the rear iron sight. An A1 looks like that one, while an A2 has a horizontal drum that raises/lowers the rear sight for on the fly adjustment.

Not sure what's happening with the muzzle device though, doesn't look like an A1 nor A2.

    >What do you think about America's Rifle and its lineage?
Pleasant to shoot, inherently accurate, and reliable. I don't really know what more you could want from a rifle. I was skeptical of Stoner's "internal piston" DI bullshit, but it turns out it just works. Yeah it's dirtier than most actions, but the carbon buildup doesn't effect the operation of the gun in any meaningful way unless you go literally 10s of thousands of rounds between basic cleaning.
I also think it's at its best with a 20 inch barrel. I don't care if "16 is the same as 20" or "14.5 is the same as 20" or whatever. 5.56/.223 was designed around a 20 inch barrel and anything less is stupid unless you have a very specific reason. (constantly in and out of vehicles, etc.)
As for which 20" variant is the best, I couldn't fricking care less. I do have to say I'm getting tired of seeing the A1 in clone circles. I wish people would do more esoteric builds honestly.

Anyway yeah luv me AR simple as.

I rarely ever see them with 30 round mags. Always that little.. 20 round mag? I admit that little mag is aesthetic.

          Anonymous

I don't know if there was ever a reason for that, but 20rd mags stuck around in service well into the 80s, when that setup was more common, so could just be by chance. Possibly some people preferred a slightly lighter gun in their hands, but it really would be very modest reduction, potentially something about getting down lower on the ground, but again it seems like it wouldn't make all that much practical difference.

Here's a pic of an M16A1 with the 'Scarface' grenade launcher setup and a 30rd magazine. I find it looks more aesthetic with 30rd mags.

Howdy fellow girthchads I got an aero enhanced handguard like this one and finally bought a streamlight HLX but I don't know how I should mount it. The arisaka offset mount doesn't have enough clearance because this handguard is too thicc. Would appreciate some recommendations.

m16a2 best battle implement ever devised by man

M16A2 should have been something akin to this.
        >keep A1 rear sight
        >keep A1 fire controls (no burst)
        >keep A1 forward assist plunger
        >keep A1 profile or develop a profile which actually holds heat better
        >add A2 deflector, delta ring, and handguard

The AR10 trialed by the military was an early prototype that had an experimental composite barrel that was never used again since one blew up.

I wish the Stoner 63 had become as popular

      Anonymous

The Stoner 63 had one good thing going, and that was the belt-fed configurations, all the other ones were superfluous. Set up like a belt-fed light machinegun, the recoil was like fricking nothing at all, and that's with ammo at half the weight of 7.62mm NATO, so you can carry lots of it. The Navy SEALs really liked the Stoner 63 and held on to it well after everyone else abandoned it, they never had a belt-fed 5.56mm NATO machinegun before and they thought it was the coolest fricking thing in the world.

The way the Stoner 63 is put together kind of makes not perfect though, all the other configs are superfluous, and it's just really maintenance heavy. I think if Stoner and Sullivan had focused on making it as a belt-fed gun exclusively, it would have been better, and it would have probably stuck around. As it is, the M249 series that replaced it basically did its job better, and served pretty well for 30 years, hopefully something like the KAC LAMG or outright brand new M249s gets to replace the old clapped out M249s in the future.

As it is though, the Stoner 63 was cool as frick.

The Block II is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of the AR-15's capability as a fighting rifle
      >THICC SOCOM profile barrel provides excellent accuracy and durability, completely nullifies recoil
      >The best quad rail ever made
      >the best stock ever made
      >entire suite of high quality accessories remain relevant and highly desirable to this day due to their legendary effectiveness
      >has been the go to rifle for SOF to stack bodies with for a over a decade
      >very successful adoption process identified needs of SOF operators and met them, fulfilled all goals and even outlived projected service life by nearly a decade now
      >before fielding the block II, it was considered a block III might see service as early as 2008, however here we are in 2022 and the block II remains relevant to this day

The AR-15 (and its military derivatives) is easily among the best weapons one could get.
I have two of them and they are both excellent.
I have an AK and a CETME but if the balloon went up today, its my 20" AR that I'm throwing in the truck.
