Diplomatic corps is the weakest link in all western countries.
The rational solution would be to recognize Somalia no longer exists and negotiate directly with Somaliland and Mogadishu while exterminating the rest. But the diplomats wouldn't have it.

          SL is 60% unionist
          40% secessionist
4 out of 5 clans are unionist... also Somaliland wasn't it's own country, it was still a colony and Somalia was also called Somaliland in all 5 Somali inhabited areas. British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland were their name. The one who JOINED SL was Italian SL to form a Somali country but the referendum includes the NFD, Djibouti and Ogaden which were forcefully taken away from Somalia 3 weeks before independence was established

For context, look at picrel & pay attention to the entire neighborhood. Especially, recall that Eritrea is becoming something of a Russian puppet state, and also remember that the Wagner Group is very active throughout the region & doing their best to keep it destabilized for their monke in moscow.

That's only part of the context. Because Saudi Arabia & Yemen & Iran are in an existential fight between Islamic factions being supported by Iran on behalf of Shiite-ism (e.g Yemen). The whole region is half a dozen flavors of Muslims that all pretty much hate each other.

The Red Sea & Gulf of Arden are critical to keep clear & functioning for world trade passing through the Suez Canal. This cannot be emphasized enough. Whatever the Hell happens here, shipping through the Suez cannot be interrupted (t. Evergreen).

Add to that historic war, food famine, drought to most of the territories. Just for spice.

The U.S. & China have found common cause, undoubtedly backed by everyone else in the functioning civilized world. The calculus here is to NOT allow another ISIS to form, especially with its own, sovereign caliphate. Absolutely nobody has an interest here in even the slightest interruption in shipping, although there will be different factions taking different sides.

Given Somalia is recognized as a sovereign nation, some have made the calculus they'd rather see Somalia remain a monolithic (and dysfunctional) state. In particular, Somaliland breaking off as a sovereign Islamist state is probably considered the greater danger, especially if it becomes an oil-wealthy nation.

Watch for Saudi Arabia, Russia, & Iran to all dip their tentacles into the inkwell. Not to support a particular side, but to stir up a shitstorm and destabilize the region. Even further. These are the main players who are too stupid to realize disruption of shipping here is bad for everyone, including themselves, but they'd rather shoot themselves in the balls so they can "own t3h NATO"

          1. Somaliland isn't islamist (well, it kinda is, but more in line with SEA countries then ISIS)
          2. The US isn't necessarily against Somaliland independence, we're just leaving it to the AU, and the AU doesn't want the precedent that it would set.

        >Diplomatic corps is the weakest link in all western countries.
Western diplomacy is excellent, which is why we don't fight each other anymore and why we continue to be on top of our game despite the growing global south. If they're the weakest link then we must be fricking excellent at everything else.
        >The rational solution would be to recognize Somalia no longer exists and negotiate directly with Somaliland and Mogadishu while exterminating the rest. But the diplomats wouldn't have it.
Making deals with provinces over the central government goes against the agreed upon principles of African Union member states such as their hardline stance against modifying borders by force. Recognizing Somaliland or treating them as an official partner will draw the ire of the rest of Africa and push them closer to our rivals. The consequences of trying to solve the Somalia problem outweigh the benefits of actually solving it. The US can unofficially or covertly back Somaliland but the current situation doesn't permit recognition.

        Anonymous

        >The rational solution
depends entirely on what your goals are. In the case of the US, Somaliland is worth something roughly between jack and shit, whereas the precedent of respecting UN-recognized borders of sovereign states is at the core of their geopolitical toolbox.

Plus the factions controlling the actual horn are mostly Mogadishu-aligned even if not really under Mogadishu control, so it makes more sense even in the short sighted strategic sense to side with them.

I’d be interest to know where those C-17s landed before jumping to the conclusion they’ll make a difference in the somaliland conflict.
    >Mogadishu is far away from Somaliland. >Road quality in Somalia ranges from utter shit to non-existent
    >The US embassy is announcing this, so these weapons were clearly given to the recognized Somali government, which controls very little of the territory within Somalia’s borders
    >Al Shabaad controls more territory in eastern Somalia than the government; transportation would be made more difficult because of this
    >According to the announcement, they were given for the purpose of fighting Al Shabaab, so there’s probably some loose strings attached
I just don’t see how they could make their way far north enough, assuming they were dropped at Mogadishu

not Somalia but Puntland. The Somali goverment only controls Mogadishu. Puntland may proclaim that they are part of Somalia but in reality they act on their own and given the state of the Somali government i doubt they have any influence over breakaway states

        >/k/ generally supports somaliland because ...
... they were attacked by Somalia and are defending their semi-functioning homeland. Also the other things you said.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somaliland

However, /k/ is moronic (as usual) in that they think that Somaliland is "sovereign" (it isn't) and that it isn't an Islamic state (wannabe).

Motto: لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله
        Lā ilāhā illā-llāhu; muhammadun rasūlu-llāh
"There is no God but Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of God"

        >Throughout the Middle Ages, Arab immigrants arrived in Somaliland, including the Muslim sheikhs Ishaaq bin Ahmed, who founded the Isaaq clan, and Abdirahman bin Isma'il al-Jabarti who founded the Darod clan, who both travelled from Arabia to Somaliland and married into the local Dir clan, which have been described as legendary stories. Also during the Middle Ages, Somali empires dominated the regional trade, including the Sultanate of Ifat and the Adal Sultanate.

        >In the 18th century, the Isaaq Sultanate, a Somali successor state to the Adal Sultanate, was established by Sultan Guled Abdi at Toon. The sultanate spanned parts of the Horn of Africa and covered most of modern-day Somaliland.

If China and the U.S. have found common cause here, it's because there is something incredibly fricked up going on. There's probably intelligence about harboring Islamic terrorists funded by Iran &/or some other mudslime shithole. Recent discovery of petrochemical reserves means it suddenly just became a WEALTHY mudslime shithole.

        Can't have that.

The US is supporting the fight against jihadists in the south of the country, not Somaliland's fight for independence (because they're being screwed and genocided by Somalia and Puntland). The fact Somalia might use these against Somaliland is just a side-effect of that. Somaliland should be supported because they are the only functioning non-moronic state in the area.

However China are supporting Somalia against Somaliland because the oil will go China's way.

Don't be moronic, this has nothing to do with Somaliland, but to do with Somalia being a dysfunctional shithole that needs propping up because they can't run a fricking country and Islamist rape the horn from Djibouti to Kenya.
