AK-5C

Any Swedes here?
Has anyone ever seen one of these in real life?
Anyone have any experience or knowledge about it to share?

The AK5C is one of the coolest guns in my opinion, second only to the SG550.

I'd love to hear anecdotes about the accuracy, reliability, and durability of the gun.

I'm aware that at it's core it's basically an FN FNC, but in my opinion that would be akin to saying the valmet or SG550 is basically an AK. Although it's true, saying that is to lose the nuance and improvements of what the platform is, which I'd like to learn about

I would be so pissed if they decided to ship AK 5s to Ukraine when they have been saying for 20 years that they are gonna upgrade the main armament for the national guard, at least give them mortars ffs.

          Hello from Norway

Nobody here has ever seen one in real life let alone touched one. Dont get salty when a forum full of Americans hasn't used a Swedish military rifle.

I've seen one, during Cold Response 2016 a part of my unit worked together with some swedes, hopefully due to recent geopolitical events i might get a chance to shoot one in future exercises.

I think it's a handsome rifle, especially the handguard. But the stock is kinda ugly

I had an airsoft one once, so I can only speak to the ergos. It handled well, and folding stocks are nice, but fundmentally it provides no real advantage over the AR platform

      Anonymous

Yeah it really does seem like the AR is the ultimate weapon platform, nothing even comes close to comparing to it as far as ergos reliability accuracy etc. It's really unfair to compare guns against it

Although I guess without drawing the comparison to the big dawg how do you actually quantify all those values for a gun like the AK5C

Can't speak to the AK5C, but I do own an FNC.
It's heavy for what it is, but so are a lot of other Cold War-era non-AR's.
The AK5C definitely improved upon a few things that the FNC did, such as the extraction which is noticeably weak on the FNC.
I personally have never had a single malfunction with my FNC, but it does have that limp-dick extraction.
I do have an AK5C extractor, but just never got around to installing it yet.

Opinion on the FNC in relation to the Sg550?

        Anonymous

They're both pretty similar in terms of form, function, and reliability, but if I had to choose between the two, I may have to go with the FNC.
Difference in weight between them is pretty negligible, but one thing that bothers me about the 550 is that it is very front-heavy.
The FNC on the other hand is very balanced, I also definitely like the AR mag compatibility and ergos.
I will say that I do like the bolt-release on the 550 and that if we were instead comparing the 551 or 553 versus the FNC, I would probably reconsider my choice.

          Anonymous

What about the 551 or 553 is so different that you'd reconsider your choice versus the FNC?

Aren't the only differences that they have shorter barrels? Or are you including the sg556 in with them and the stanag magazine compatibility is also a factor?

    Finn gay here.
Haven't used AK5s myself, but the few Swedes I've talked to essentially told that they prefer the old 1990s' version in terms of weight and ergos. The C-variant's all RAILZ and shit, but heavier.

All in all, it's a fine NATO-rifle for the Nordic environments, better than any AR could hope to be. I'd still prolly take a Galil or a new SAKO rifle over it.

      >new SAKO rifle
There is a new version of the valmet?

        Anonymous

        No, there isn't.
SAKO however has just recently finished the Finnish DF's new DMR, essentially a Finnish posh AR10 in .308 (pic rel), which'll start replacing the old TK-85 and SVDs in service in following years. There's been a lot of rumors (and some speculated photos) that they might start developing infantry rifles next.

        Yes, the SAKO. :DD

No. Sako made a new .308 for FDF and swedes accidentally wrote in press release that they are cooperating with shop and FDF for new service rifle to replace ak5. No clue about the caliber yet but probably something between 5.56 and 7.62

In what ways exactly? I spent the better part of 8 years with the 416 in the high artic, and even a shit-for-brains conscript could operate that rifle without any issues after about a month

Top rail blocks gas adjustment. Side rails get blocked by the green plastic so you can put peq on them or most lights because the mount his the plastic.

The accuracy and reliability is fine however the gun is nearing the end of its servicelife. They tend to break more and more these days.

Other than that, It's heavy as shit and it only gets worse the more stuff you slap on to it.

I had one as a conscript. I thought it was a total POS but maybe I got a lemon, it's worth keeping in mind that these are just old AK5's "upgraded" to the AK5C standard. It is a product of bureaucracy, if we had any sense we should've jumped on Norway's HK 416 deal, we ended up paying way more for a subpar gun. I see a lot of people have mentioned the extractor, fun fact; when I was in it was forbidden to shoot the AK5C without eyepro because the extractor ripped the brass to shit and some conscript had to get eye surgery because he got a shard of brass in his eye. Also in their attempt to "modernize" the AK5 they made it heavier. If you dropped the plastic mags they cracked, when I was in they were still trying to produce mags that didn't break, we were using the 3rd generation mags and they still hadn't worked that out, if you use the steel mags the bolt hold open won't work. I had horrible reliability but as I said maybe I got a lemon. Rear flip up sight is locked to one position due to the rail, also it is locked to the higher gas setting due to the shorter barrel length. Also some dude in my unit stole the charging handle when we had weapons maintenance, he said he lost it but it turned out he wanted to put it on his airsoft version, I am surprised he didn't get fricked up because they made two companies look for it and revoked our weekend passes. Everyone hated him even before that. I was in the last batch of conscripts before they reformed and made it volunteer, IIRC they have conscription again now? Anyway it was a sad time for the Army, no one wanted to go so the people they got had no business there. Also sad as frick to be on base and half of the buildings are empty. Our house was three stories I think and we only occupied the first floor and even then not all the rooms. If there is something you want to know just ask.

      >in their attempt to "modernize" the AK5 they made it heavier
More stuff leads to greater weight. At least it's shorter.

      >If you dropped the plastic mags they cracked, when I was in they were still trying to produce mags that didn't break
From what I've heard, they eventually succeeded.

      >Anyway it was a sad time for the Army, no one wanted to go so the people they got had no business there
Sounds odd to me. I did my conscription a few years earlier, and by then they were taking in so few conscripts that they could take only those who were motivated, overqualified for their positions and with no health issues whatsoever. I had friends who wanted to serve, but weren't allowed to because of allergies.

And another thing, you can't turn the red dot sight off so it is always draining the battery. Like why?

If those are the same aimpoints we're using in the home guard, and they look like they are, then they do have an off setting. Battery does last an absurdly long time even if you leave it on, though.

We had one guy with breathing difficulties, at night he would snore so loud that the empty lockers would rattle, I'm not even bullshitting. I am so glad I didn't share rooms with him.
The sights are Aimpoint CS, it might be the same that they use on the AK4. Ours didn't have an off setting, they told us to use the lowest brightness setting when we put them in storage to help battery life.

Dollar for dollar it is probably the best investment for strategic safety Sweden has ever made.

I did a year as motorized infantry in the Swedish army. It's really short and easy to use when you get in and out of vehicles. Excellent for urban combat. Easy to clean and maintain. The only downside I noticed was that it weighs like a motherfricker. We got to try AKM and M16s in the end and they felt like toyguns in comparison.

I'm currently in the homeguard and use the AK4 but I would easily trade it for the AK5C. The AK4/G3 is really long and not suited for urban combat or easy disembarkment.

I used to old model during conscription and I’ve used the C and D models on exercises more recently. It’s a fine carbine, but too heavy for what it is. A modern 5,56 carbine like an AR would probably be better.

They’ll be replaced soon enough, Bofors hasn’t made new ones in ages and the current stock is dwindling.

almost no recoil but it's heavy, only shot it once as we still used ak4 when i did conscription
