AGM-88 HARM continues to pound Russian AD

A Russian Telegram channel claims a HARM struck their Pantsir system. They claim the crew were knocked out and the radar dish was destroyed.

without warning in advance that missile is coming (basically need to detect launch) it's impossible for the crew to react fast enough.

Why has Russia both failed to develop a SEAD/DEAD strategy of its own and also failed to develop a counter to western SEAD/DEAD? It's not that they can't figure how or don't have the tech, they just haven't put in the effort to try. What were they thinking?

I mean it all really comes down to how poor Russia is. You can't have a Canada sized economy and a US level military. They are basically a third world military larping as a superpower. Like picrel but they actually got people to believe them.
They are running on the smaller than most people think, slowly depleting and rusted out stockpiles of the Soviet Union and i can't wait until it runs out.

        >Not read the thread
It's clear you don't read much, the USA neutralized Russian AD with dispersed units well prior to 1970.

See what you do is you let the shitty Russian missile actually launch at you, then you ride down the launch path and destroy the launcher while counter-measuring and running the missile out of fuel.

In an 'interceptor' called a 'Thud' which was renowned for being more uncomfortable than an F-4, which was renowned for proving that you can make a brick fly if you strap enough thrust to it.

Oh, and it also makes Americans the most Chad pilots of all time.

Russia made the mistake of assuming that the Western air superiority model of air defence would be the only thing they'd face off against. They didn't expect to go up against someone as SAM heavy as themselves.

doubtful since patriot is still a widespread and capable long range air defence one can't just ignore a few long range systems that cover a large area of the front and force aircraft down into stinger range

For me 2008 was before 2014.
I'm not sure if they even got sanctioned for the war against Georgia.

russia got off very easy from the georgia invasion but no war is cheap and 2008 also had the global financial crisis that caused deep harm to the russian economy then oil prices rose and the economy was improving somewhat then oil prices fell, 2014 invasion happened, and sanctions precipitated a decline that has lasted until this year when it all got a lot worse, interestingly my russian friend mentions 2008 and not 2014 as the start of the decline which is sad considering they had the 1998 financial crisis only 10 years before that and the fall of the ussr only a little before that, keep in mind as well that a good russian economy mostly benefits the oligarchs so the russian people get a trickle of the highs and all of the lows from russia's corrupt resource-based economy

No I mean he’s not really wrong. Outside of the very early days of Lenin the Soviet Union never really experimented or changed up their theory of political power.

It was primarily concerned with the maintenance of the Party first and foremost, and the Leninist “democratic centralism” concept ended up calcifying the party and lead to many of their problems that started compounding in the 70’s.

In a sense of being a “dynamic” or “changing” society the Soviet Union was deeply conservative, and honestly by the 60’s in comparison to most liberal democracies could be pretty fairly categorized as being outwardly reactionary.

This isn’t saying they weren’t communist. But really, if you go back and read Marx, he’s sort of an arch-conservative in many aspects. His ideal political end state is basically just returning to small scale 17th century farming communities for the rest of history.

You can be both communist and conservative, considering "conservative" is not a coherent political ideology, but merely a desire to preserve the status-quo. E.g. in the USA being a liberal makes you a conservative.

This gets even more confusing in the USA when you realise many "liberals" are actually anti-liberal socialists and many "conservatives" are extremely opposed to the status-quo of the past 100 years and want to see the country radically transformed.

It's almost like you missed the whole part where authoritarians ~110-120 years ago called themselves "Progressives", right up until WWI ended, at which point they called themselves "Liberals", until about 20 years ago, when they started calling themselves "Progressives" again. Yes, there's very little that's "progressive" or "liberal" about them, but those are the names that they successfully hid behind; trying to reclaim the old meaning of those words is confusing at best and disingenuous at worst.

If using their own terminology is too offensive to you, just call them what they are: "statist" or "authoritarian". But please stop trying to call them "conservative" just because they, as Erdogan once said, reached their stop and got off.

It's not even that complex of a system. Its just a light pole sized rocket that has modern GPS and INS tracking that has a 10m CEP. That's what the Smerch touts itself to be, but it falls short because of shit CEP.
That's why seeing assblasted vatniks seething at HIMARS is so funny. It's just a rocket with fricking GPS strapped on that actually works.

          Anonymous

HARM is pretty complex as far as ARMs go. It can use plane's own RWR and EW systems and fly along programmed trajectories from that data. Later upgrades added a whole lot more stuff, including GPS guidance which greatly improved accuracy and ARH seeker for terminal guidance so even the shut down system cannot run away and so on.

Compared to that, Shrike was primitive, and Standard ARM was the first general purpose basic ARM. The latter, when detecting the signal with its own seeker would be launched and due to its own INS would continue to fly straight even if the radar was turned off. It would also have a memory chip that would remember the frequency that the radar worked on and pick it back up after it's turned on.

            Anonymous

ow, and HARM can track frequency hopping radars as well, not being limited to old style radars that work on just one.

HARM has lots of secrets and tricks built in it and if russians hadn't managed to get technical data for it in the 80s(which they probably have, they were pretty successful at at) then it would be a pretty unpleasant intelligence breach if one would end up in russian hands now. Although considering russian tech, it's unlikely that they'd be able to do anything with it, just like they haven't since the 80s.

The current modern day SEAD capabilities being used by the US have evolved way past the 1991 and 2003. Simply put the processors on the newer anti-radiation HARMs production lots are a lot better at dealing with spoofing and old school tactics.

              Anonymous

modern day SEAD is much less about anti radiation missiles at all. TALDs were adopted shortly after HARMs and are used to bait and track enemy radar activity while also being recoverable, unlike anti radiation loitering munitions. EW systems do similar things along with their usual purpose of jamming shit. These have improved vastly today, especially with AESA radars being integrated into EW suite and being used for both intelligence gathering and jamming.

Not to mention another significant capability that's become available recently is ability to discern ground targets using radars with high resolution, not requiring any of the aforementioned systems at all because you can discern trucks from tanks from radar arrays now just via SAR map of the area. This was observed when testing F-35 as their usual decoys/radar stand-ins for excercises were being ignored as the system could discern them from the real thing. Once you've detected them, it's a matter of lobbing a single JDAM/GBU-39 at that target coordinates, just like you would attack a surface vessel at sea.

This is also very important for DEAD as normally non radiating things like launchers and command trucks can also be detected and tracked.

                Anonymous

pic related: this is what F-35's radar sees and the onboard computer automatically analyses and classifies the targets based on the data. This is the data just for the radar, there are capabilities beyond it.

Aren't TALDs used in conjunction with anti-rad missiles amongst other weapons? AFAIK they're intended to help saturate the enemy AIDS in order to improve the chances of your missiles making it through.

                Anonymous

Yes, they are used to bait enemy radars into tracking them and attempting to destroy them, which may expose them not just through their search radar but also via targeting radar and missile launch. They track enemy radar activity and send the data back home, have their own self protection system and are also used for standoff jamming. They are also recoverable and can return into your territory once low on fuel or their mission is done.

They aren't really used for just saturating enemy air defenses before a strike because it's a rather inefficient use of them. Doing all that while also serving appearing as a regular aircraft to the enemy isn't exactly cheap.

These AD systems seriously need AESA or they’re always going to get smacked by HARMs. At least have an AESA somewhere feeding tracking data to launch units. Anything but sitting there with an old radar lighting itself up.

      Anonymous

russians have developed their first AESA search radars with the NEBO-M complex, but these are optional addition and the basic system is still the same.

Moreso, old systems like S-300(and S-300PMU-4 aka S-400 is no exception) have an engagement radar that is needed to light up the target so the missile can see it, which is obviously detectable to the anti radiation missiles.

        Anonymous

Google LPI radar. Modern AESAs (exotic materials, cutting edge CPUs and fully software-controlled antennae, etc) allow for a combination of several techniques which used together results in LPI (low probability of intercept). Meaning it’s unlikely for a RWR to pick up on the radar. Basically a stealth radar. If a plane-sized RWR can’t pick up those than the tiny antenna in a HARM stands no chance.

          Anonymous

Google SARH missile engagement radar. It is required to guide the missile on target, and cannot be LPI. In fact, there are exactly 0 AESA engagement radars in existence.

Well, to his point, even the USN is moving away from SARH; the SM-2 Blk IIIC will use the SM-6's AMRAAM-derived seeker, thus removing the need for illumination radars altogether.

The downside is, that makes the missiles themselves a lot more expensive, and Russia likes SARH or even just command-guidance in part because it puts the expensive, hard-to-build bits inside a non-expendable vehicle, keeping the price of the actual missiles down.

texas instruments was also responsible for the Tacit Rainbow, among other things. That missile was a complement/successor to the HARM and made soviets absolutely shit their pants when it first appeared, to the point that they started claiming that a 400 pound missile with a 20lb warhead is nuclear armed and therefore should be included in nuclear weapons limitation treaties. US finished their development but didn't produce them to not increase tensions with then hopefully non communist russians.

You could do SEAD with B-52s armed with these, with a single plane carrying 30 each.

A similar weapon was developed later by israel with their Harpy and its derivative Harop that did a number on russian air defense systems in the recent azerbaijan-armenian conflict.

They make microchips and microelectronics; heck, they *invented* the integrated circuit and the microcomputer (at about the same time as Intel, in a case of parallel development), as well as the transistor radio and the calculator. Calculators were just an easy way to make money off of simple chips back in the day; it may be difficult for folks born afterwards to understand just how big an impact they made. TI sold zillions, and they still sell the high-end graphing calculators used by college students today.

Oh, and a large chunk of Raytheon's military electronic products came from TI, which sold its entire defense-related business to them during the Peace Dividend years.

The AGM-88A, and AGM-88B warhead section contains 25,000 pre-formed steel fragments, an explosive charge, a fuze, and a fuze booster. The AGM-88C utilizes an improved warhead section containing 12,845 tungsten fragments and an improved explosive charge which provides greater overall lethality.

i thought the way harms work, is the host plane waits for suspicious radar signals. then it gets a "lock" on the signal, and they launch it.

You can use the plane's radar in tandem with the missile, or you could launch it at predetermined coordinates like a brimstone and let it search of it's own target.
