It's honestly less the firepower and protection and more the dog shit fire control system and lack of any thermal sights in the Soviet era tanks. If you happen to survive all the ATGMs/Artillery/Mines, it might be nice to be able to actually spot and hit enemy targets. Particularly at night. Even those budget 1PN96MT-02 thermals are significantly better than the Soviet era optics.
Also keep in mind that cheap is relative. A T-72A isn't exactly cheaper than a T-90M in terms of the logistical cost of keeping it fueled and maintained on the front-line.

While it may be inevitably destroyed, you’d still want some form of combat effectiveness on the battlefield. A BMP-3 that kills some enemies is going to help a lot more than a BMP-1 that kills no one, and is just a logistics sink.
I mean most of their "endless" supplies of T-72s are shittier older models
