Why are we making 32 of these? Just to flex? I'm not complaining.

Americans aren't fighting their peers, they fight against goat herders in middle east or somalis in the forrests. These enemies have large numbers, but next to no air coverage other than shitty, outdated soviet made missiles. After gaining air dominance, US can give close air support with those planes. Against anyone with AA capabilities they're useless.

The US did pretty decently with them in Vietnam and Cambodia. They still needed escorts, but only six were lost compared to the absolute mayhem they wrecked on NVA/VC supplies and they're track record with providing devastating CAS.

Yeah the obsolescence thing is overstated if intel is good enough (not russian) and you're an actual real army capable of actual basic combined arms maneuvers (not russian). Long range AA is small in number, large number AA has short range, so can easily just watch where AA is, do SEAD on long range stuff/radars, do a first pass in a given small area ground forces will need help in, use AC130 selectively right after then leave before more can turn up.

What difference in roles do the wing-mounted GBU-53 small diameter bomb, bay-mounted AGM-176 Griffin personal guided munition, and Hellfires play? Obviously different size boom-booms and time to target, but what else?
And how many dudes have to be crammed in there to work al this shit?

But I don't think that the new autocannon would improve range that much? It's only 25mm vs 30mm, not a huge difference.

It's not just the width in caliber that changes, overall length of the shell and casing can dramatically effect the performance of the round in ways that are not immediately apparent when only referring to ammunition by diameter.

      >GBU-53 small diameter bomb,
Glide bomb. Long stand off range. Comes in quietly. No visible light from launching it.

      >Hellfires
Missile with duel purpose anti tank and anti personnel warhead. Can also be fitted with the ninja warhead that uses swords to kill high value targets with minimal collateral damage. Can also track helicopters to an extent. Decent range. Fast.

      >AGM-176 Griffin
Air to surface missile with ability to stealthily launch as a glide bomb if desired. Flexible. Smaller than Hellfire. Less collateral damage and more carry capacity. Useful against agile ground targets like armored cars, boats, and infantry.

The last 8 months give every indication that a "neer peer" does not exist in the short to mid future.and the MIC makes good money keeping it that way. Meanwhile desert apes and forest coons are going to continue to be a fly in the ointment of our international interests, and these systems and platforms are ideal for that.

Gunships are incredibly potent if you have good SEAD. Nothing is safe from it and it can shoot for a LONG time. Attack aircraft can drop bigger bombs, but a gunship can spread out its payload for maximum effect and will be a constant threat for hours. A single AC-130H can kill dozens of tanks and IFVs along with another few dozen infantry squads. Your guys on the ground can just point at what they need killed and it will be dead in seconds.

Could you even imagine how many battles would have become trivial in Ukraine with such capability? Just looking at raw combat footage, the danger that thing would present in the Eastern European theater would be unparalleled.

Maybe Ukraine should ask for a couple from Lend Lease and some F-15E's or F-16's for escorts.

I worked on ACj’s for a couple years, a funny story I like to share is the J models didn’t have the 105mm at first cause every time they shot it the J model props would get damaged. J model props are made from fiber glass while the H model props are steel. Also you can convert a MC-130J to become a AC-130J.

Here’s a better angle of the art, this on like majority of the planes, we’re not allowed to have fun anymore and put special decals

So you're saying the H model steel props were just brushing off the damage the whole time, and this wasn't really understood until more fragile props revealed the issue?

I guess no one at locksneed fartin thought about it, H props are stupid strong they kill birds no problem but if you bonk a J prop you have to change it. It’s also easier to removed the entire prop assembly over an individual prop. Btw I’m aircraft maintenance
