ABRAMNS IN URKRAINE?

I smell frickery afoot in this Ukrainian abramns controversy because the official narrative doesnt make any sense. I think the US is being a b***h about abramns because they are afraid it will be humiliated. It has a really high ground pressure and will get fricked to death in the mud. it also has a inferior gun to the leopard and t72.

they did move several hundred to europe, it's possible that they've been pulling em off to get them upgraded to SEPv3 while SEPv4 nears completion

Poland is going to receive 250 or so SepV3s so the hulls were taken out of storage and brought up to the V3 standard to give to Poland.

a couple of years ago, congress voted to keep producing them despite the army telling them they didnt want or need them.
not only is there a huge surplus, there is a bunch still being built.
sending them to the ukies is literally a slam dunk.
the only reason they wouldnt, that i can think of, is they know it will perform badly.

They keep producing them because it would be more expensive and take longer to start a new tank program from scratch instead of modifying the existing Abrams production line. So now there's a huge surplus and they were just giving them away to Iraq and whoever else. Might as well send them to ukraine too.

but if we start seeing picture of a bunch of abrams sinking into the mud, blown up by kornets and falling into rivers and shit, and ukrainians testifying that leopards are better, americans might demand that it be replaced and make the corrupt army hierarchy very mad.. it is pretty fricking old now and probably needs to be replaced anyway.

That's the number one thing that not enough people are taking note of or considering.

Any vehicle or piece of equipment at the front is going to be destroyed in large numbers. Abrams gonna get hit in the side by a kornet or pancaked by a kransopol same as t-62.

If you don't use them at the front, they are useless.

Same goes for f-16 and stuff. They have to get within range of SAMs and MiG 31, a shit load are gonna get lost even if they eventually come out on top.

    >turbines can use many different types of fuel without issue.

Its not what they burn its having enough to burn and the abrams eats a LOT of fricking fuel compared to any other tank. Its literally fricking insane.

    >the power pack can be removed and replaced in the field

It requires having spare power packs the vehicles to do said repair and the training of troops to be able to do the repair. Unless you want to send 4 support vehicles for every abrams and the staff for those vehicles trained in their use its a really fricking stupid idea to give someone with a gimped logistics capability something that is so maintenance hungry.

The abrams is a good tank but there simply isnt a world that exists where any other country has the logistics capability to actually field them in any reasonable number except the US. If ukraine gets some their supply lines will be strained far harder than if they got literally any other tank.

Time to start cranking out M60a3’s again I suppose. Considering they’d only be facing T-62s and T-72s (which they have a proven track record against)

        Anonymous

Retooling to make old shit is an even bigger mistake for everyone involved than just procuring from another location and creates more problems in the long run. What ukraine needs is more platforms they are familiar with or a lot of a single platform that is low maintenance. The more different models you have of a platform the more of a pain in the dick keeping everything running is and if those platforms are totally different than what they are used to working on they cant repair them. The best thing you can give ukraine is actually the same t62 and 72 they are used to using because they already know how to use and repair them. Barring that the best case scenario is ONE model of MBT so they dont have to try and figure out how to repair and maintain three different models.

          Anonymous

Brainlet here. So to give them a platform they’re familiar with, let’s say T-72s, what would it take to give them the numbers they need, as well as spare parts and ammunition? could the US just outright start producing them just for export? Or any other old/cheap MBTs, like

Time to start cranking out M60a3’s again I suppose. Considering they’d only be facing T-62s and T-72s (which they have a proven track record against)

          , for that matter.
And if they can’t, could another European nation do it? Someone who has a history with Soviet platforms, like Poland?

            Anonymous

            >could the US just outright start producing them just for export?

No. Tooling up production is a MASSIVE effort especially if its on platforms you have no experience building. If you want T series tanks you buy them off people that already have them. By the time another country tools up the war could already be over and the nation that just retooled their entire industry now has an entirely useless toolset. Same thing applies for building older tanks like the M60. It would be a year MINIMUM for the first one to roll off the plant and you just spent millions of dollars to change your state of the art factories to produce old outdated tech.

Basically the best thing that can be done is finding old stock from someone that doesnt need it to ship over. Producing from scratch is too slow and too expensive for anyone not already producing them. Which is basically just russia.

They should send 50 from active units in order to appease the Germans and allow the Ukrainians to build up training time on them.
Europe could send ~200 leopards from a mix of sources at the same time.

The idea would be that in the short term leopards will fill the demands, but in the long term, if considerably more tanks are needed, they are ready to receive M1s.
The US has deep reserves of the M1 in storage, whereas in Europe most Leopards are not likely to be given away.

  19. 1 year ago

The logistics excuse is absolute horseshit. Joe just wants the European Leopards to die a quick death so he can fill European stocks up with Abrams after the war.
