A friend volunteered to kill Russians

Back in September, they just called him now. What's the best non-standard issue gear under $5000 I can get him to improve his devatnification powers. Can go up to $10000 if it makes a huge difference. I had AGM NVG-40 in mind, what do you think?

Exporting NVGs could be an ITAR violation.

Would anyone actually care? I'm pretty sure NATO citizens at this point can commit textbook international terrorism and get away scot free so long as they target government employees / infrastructure only. Like sure, I am from a funny article 5 country, but my employer literally sent out a mail teaching us how to DDOS Russian internet on our free time.

he'll probably be digging trenches and foxholes and not do tacticool raid operations. just send him extra warm clothes and whatever tools that a grunt can use. Hohol issue gear will probably be of mixed value so having high quality kit can probably help him best.

This is the answer. Also get him good boots and if possible ir camo. Some good electronic hearing protection may also be useful depending on what he does.

You better off buying him some drones (have short lifetime, ~2 weeks, you money is quickly gone but have probably the biggest impact) or a very good thermal than a NVG which get stolen or damaged in the first week. Beside a full set of gear like warm clothes and good socks like merino wool or new shoes. Plates and Helmet have of course priorities. Just ask him directly.

My friend is over here since March and I send him stuff like first aid kit, coffee and chocolate and some milsurp stuff, which went to the legion but he never requested anything else after that. Also my entire full gear list for myself which I created last spring/summer was around $3000-4000 but I never went due rl stuff. So with this budget you can go nuts and buy for several people.

Believes in what? Dying for Raytheon? Dying so the global elite can continue to use Ukraine to launder money? Honestly I hope the guy signed up just for the chance to kill Russians, because that's the only noble cause in this war.

I remember when people would post Russian internal passports before it got boring

also are passport numbers sequential? if so then kind of wack that in a few months between my passport and his 500,000 new passports must have been issued

US passport wagie here. Yes, they're sequential but they get delivered all over the country here by the box.

This is just one guy's opinion and it might depend on where and how your friend is deployed, but might still be useful.

There's an anon here on /k/ who occasionally posts from the trenches too, and one thing I remember him mentioning is that the issue plate carriers are shit, so it might be worth considering getting him a quality one and maybe the plates themselves too, not sure how available they are downrange or if there are ITAR issues bringing them. A helmet might be worth considering as well. Other than that, though, from what I've heard you're more likely to find useful stuff at REI or a similar camping store than at a gun or surplus store, most of the relevant combat gear will be issued but there's a lot of comfort and survival stuff that won't, for example a small stove (but not one that needs proprietary gas canisters) and a set of lightweight cooking and eating utensils can be incredibly valuable to bring, as can good long underwear, good socks, quality hiking boots, maybe some decent compact binoculars or a monocular, etc. Oh, and definitely a good IFAK with multiple quality tourniquet etc.

antimicrobial undergarments & socks. Bring triple what you think you need
insulating thermal mid- and outer-layers (thermal long johns, shirts, & packable down vest/coats)
waterproof rain shell (FROGG TOGGS are good on a budget)
insulated winter coat (packable is always nice)
glove liners, abrasion resistant work gloves, and thicker, insulated gloves
heavy balaclava for sitting around in the cold, light skiing facemask or hat for when you’re moving around and staying warm
    Eye pro/sunglasses
    Boots - comfortable and waterproof

    >Mess kit
cat can stove (takes most liquid fuels, unbreakable)
    lighter
    800ml or larger cookpot/cup
    spork
aluminum foil folded into squares (endlessly useful, can be folded into a windscreen, or cook food on top of / in a fire)
    bandana (to handle hot cookpot)

    >Hydration
    aqua mira tablets
bleach solution (cleans gear, treats water)
water bottle/bladder (I really like the Platy 2.0L collapsible water bottle, they fold down flat)
! - water filter and case (keep this in a pocket in an inner layer to prevent it from freezing if you’re outdoors)

    >Toiletries
    toothbrush & toothpaste
    floss
    safety pins
    ziplock & stuffsacks
    latex gloves
    lip balm
    body wipes

    >First Aid
splurge on this shit, everything from extra tourniquets to SAM splints, and plenty of extra meds (especially antibiotics, acetaminophen/tylenol, loperamide / Immodium, diphenhydramine / benadryl)
    gauze pads
    medical tape
    duct tape
    antiseptic wipes

If this is real, buy him a tourniquet and then tell him to use it on his neck if he ever receives any kind of head injury. It will prevent him from bleeding to death.

A very high-quality handheld nightvision optic that takes up most of your budget is the best thing. That's what's going to save lives. And then camping supplies and drones to make up the rest.
