It's also a highly survivable missile launching platform.

If anything, the static trenchlines and lack of clear air supremacy show how it could be ideally used. Also the highway of death or roads in general. And with hardpoints, you can mount anything the eggheads cook up next as long as it's within the weight category. No reason to retire when you can just keep the institutional knowledge and keep until they're dead.

It can't be used in any symmetric or close to symmetric conflict - literally any anti-air system can down it.
And using it against sandBlack folk running around with AKs is not only a waste of money, it's way too much of a risk to friendly forces.

I had one of these fly below me when I was at the OPs on Tillman. Shit was cash. Nothing else you said matters because you're a gay.

A plane that’s a POS wouldn’t have stayed in service for 50 years.

      >spend billions of dollars to develop a plane that has no use
How are you then going to explain scrapping it immediately to tax payers?
Of course you're going to "use" if for some time to not seem like a fraud.

It's only been in service 50 years because Congress has forced it to stay. USAF wanted it replaced in 1989.

The point was to be a shit bomb truck that could be used to support skirmishes after the hot mess of a hypothetical Soviet offensive in Europe had smoked enough of the F-4/F-111 (eventually F-16 and F-15E) fleet that they couldn't spare the big boys for smaller fronts.

I mean it's as much the Army's fault as it is Congress, they're the ones telling boomer politicians "nuh uh we need the A-10 it's irreplaceable"

It's pretty dogshit, but at the same time, the Air Force needs to accept that there's a role for dedicated CAS aircraft or let the Army just run their own fixed wing CAS program. The only reason it's still around is because neither of those things have happened.

      Its called an attack heli.

I'm only partially joking here. The A10 is essentially just a Apache with more hardpoints and a faster time to arrival in terms CAS. Which is why most countries use that for CAS.

A dedicated CAS aircraft that only justifies its existance by being there slightly faster (which, certaintly, has merits in any situation where CAS is called) is something you'd only get if you have more money than god.

Admittingly, the A10 is fricking antiquated by now. As fun as the BRRTT is, nowadays with smart munitions being a thing and targeting solutions being a lot more advanced, if you really want a cannonry option for aircraft for cheap CAS with a minimal danger close radius, going for something like a revolver cannon in 50-60mm with AHEAD-like munitions will probably do it more cheaply, more controllably and with more passes than a 30mm hailstorm would. Just fire 3 of those shots back to back and turn everything in a 5-30m radius around the aimpoint into a gaseous matter, depending on whether your targets are hiding in a shed or moving up in a field. Of course, if you want something with more penetrating power, delayed explosion rounds are also an option.

Sadly, I think that once the A10 gets retired, they'll either develop a F35 variant for the task or just straight up use the F35 for it.

        >and a faster time to arrival in terms CAS
Valor even at this early stage of development is already nearly as fast. Given its vertical lift capability it can likely deploy closer to the lines and thuis actually be faster plus have the ability to hover and even deploy supplies or light vehicles. The literally only thing the A-10 has at this point is hardpoints and I kinda think a fleet of Reapers and F-35s loaded with BVR munitions easily cover that.

It makes perfect sense a platform for fighting swarms of soviet tanks in the fulda gap in 1985.

actually the A10 is the best aircraft of all time for the following reasons
    1. it makes chuds MIC enthusiasts seethe
    2. it would still be good enough for east front. its raison d'être.
    3. it makes air force generals seethe
    4. lol its gun farts scare towelies

Okay, I don't give a shit about the A10s performance, but seriously listen to an F16 strafe and tell me it isn't more scary than an A10. Sounds like that Lustmord song.

I think they should have had a gunner with down parascope so they could spot things on the ground.

They need to do the Seahog as an CATOBAR ASW platform until they R&D up a new one. I really don't get why the Navy isn't more concerned about subs, especially if they are planning to go up against China and Best Korea. Helis are good but they have range and time to response concerns. The basically got rid of the Viking over a decade ago and have yet to start whiteboarding for a replacement.
