    1. it doesn't want to
    2. it's very vulnerable in a contested airspace, which is why the DOD is petitioning to have dozens of them sunset over the next few years. They're obsolete tech when fighting anything but goatherders.

Realistically speaking it's not even a threat to goatherders at this point.

yeah i these morons think that the a-10 would go in with the cannon but it would use the hellfires.
don't get me wrong the a-10 is still a piece of shit compared to the f-35 but it's not as terrible as people make it out to be

Yes, and the Su-25 is the most downed airframe in the war. And I haven't updated this chart for a few months.
The Su-25 is also a lot faster than the A-10, and in modern air combat speed is life. The Ukrainians are still using the Su-25 because it's what they have, if they had an alternative they would drop it in a heartbeat. The A-10 would just piss their pilots away with very little advantage gained.

Now you made me imagine a scenario where Japan and SK gave Ukraine their F4s in exchange for some F-35 from the US, perhaps provide us some reenactments of the ho chi minh road around Vuhledar or Bakhmut. A man can dream...

What do those Ukrainian Su-25s do? Pitch up, fire unguided rockets and frick off back home while releasing flares.

You mean Mavericks. I don't think it was ever hooked up for the Hellfire system.
The issue with using Mavericks or Hellfires is that you still have to fly at certain altitude for your camera or laser designator to see the target. It's great when you can just orbit around the target area to lase the target, but you'll eat a SAM trying to do that.

IIRC Ukraine doesn’t even want them. And they are correct. Without some other platform to clear the way for them they aren’t useful. Basically if you can peel back the majority of air defence in an area with SEAD then the a10 can mop up extremely well, but without that it’s just not going to be useful. I’m not one of those “the a10 is garbage “ people, but it does in this day and age have a pretty narrow area that it can shine in

You need total air superiority to use those things like in Afghanistan.

Beyond that they're only good as a suicide squadron to assist a total aerial invasion by accidently intercepting missiles meant for the C-130 carrying paratroopers and dying while dispersing it's cannon upon an AA site.

Reminder that Congress forced the US navy to try and reintroduce battleships to the fleet not too long ago. The budget is set by crayon eaters. A-10 support does serve as a reliable idiot radar.

The A-10 was designed during the cold war to blunt Soviet armour thrusts. It was basically a kamikaze bomber in it's original intended role.

You have to use A-10s like we did in Iraq in 1991.

Even then expect half your fleet to get damaged.

"In January 1991, as more A-10s arrived, Lt Gen Horner, Brig Gen Buster Glosson, head planner; and the two A-10 Wing commanders, agreed the aircraft could additionally be used for ‘battlefield air interdiction’ sorties. This was usually the task of F-15Es and F-111s. The ‘Warthogs’ were to concentrate on Iraqi artillery positions, which could have wreaked havoc on advancing coalition ground forces, when the land war started."

"Also, during the first 24 hours of the air campaign (which began on January 17), the ‘Hogs’ sat alert, ready to strike Iraqi artillery had chemical weapons been used."

"The final set of targets were the most surprising with A-10s tasked to attack Iraqi early warning radars and the Nukhayb Intercept Operations Centre. They flew deep into Iraq and hit others close to the Syrian and Jordanian borders with eight-to-ten hour missions not uncommon. These highpriority targets needed to be destroyed in the initial wave of attacks, so later raids could penetrate Iraqi air defences undetected."

"Those first night attacks were extremely successful. The radar heads were struck, mostly with Maverick missiles and each site bombed and strafed. The strikes earned the Warthogs the further humorous nickname of ‘Wart Weasels’, based on the ‘Wild Weasel’ name for American aircraft used to suppress enemy air defence systems."
