There is no way that I wouldn't frick up a drill sergeant for getting in my face like that

Ermey later noted that Hartman was a bad drill sergeant, since he didn't know when to put a cork in it, and failed to notice Lawrence's mental breakdown.

I’ve watched a few interviews with Ermey about being a DI back in Vietnam era USMC and he didn’t shy away from the fact that they used verbal and physical abuse (like the gut shot to joker when he got lippy or slapping Pyle when he got right and left confused) to whip recruits into shape. He (and a lot of other sources) said it was more or less necessary because the USMC was told to train more recruits and to do it faster and the human stock they were given (draftees, many of whom bordered on mental inadequacy) weren’t the best. One of the interviews I watched did have Ermey talk about getting the ones who looked like they were about to an hero out of the USMC but he did mention how a few recruit suicides did happened, but never once did a recruit kill a DI. A recruit killing a DI is just a sensational event created for the book and then adapted to the big screen to really drive home the thematic idea that the USMC could take a frick up like Pyle and create a cold and efficient killing machine (in the book the DI who is called Gerheim actual says to Pyle “I’m proud” before he dies just to drive the point home). I’ve always thought it was a bit excessive but I still enjoy the film and book.

He wasn't drafted. If you sign up for this shit and don't have enough ego control to keep it together you're as moronic as pyle.

        >Yeah, bro, I would just punch out the DI, you can't get in my face like that, bro. Bro, I'm like respec, y'know? Bro, like, bro, like I would, like frick them up, bro.
No, you wouldn't. DIs and DSs are some of the fittest memebers of their respective branches, usually combat veterans. Not only would you not do it, but you're a moron if you attempt it, because there's always at least two more hanging around.

Just letting you know it wouldn't be a fair fight and even if by some miracle you did win, you'd go straight to the brig anyway. Good job genius

    >Gunnery Sergeant Hartman : Do any of you people know who Charles Whitman was? None of you dumbasses knows? Private Cowboy?
    >Private Cowboy : Sir, he was that guy who shot all those people from that tower in Austin, Texas, sir!
    >Gunnery Sergeant Hartman : That's affirmative. Charles Whitman killed twelve people from a twenty-eight-story observation tower at the University of Texas from distances up to four hundred yards. Anybody know who Lee Harvey Oswald was? Private Snowball?
    >Private Snowball : Sir, he shot Kennedy, sir!
    >Gunnery Sergeant Hartman : That's right, and do you know how far away he was?
    >Private Snowball : Sir, it was pretty far! From that book suppository building, sir!
    >Gunnery Sergeant Hartman : All right, knock it off! Two hundred and fifty feet! He was two hundred and fifty feet away and shooting at a moving target. Oswald got off three rounds with an old Italian bolt action rifle in only six seconds and scored two hits, including a head shot! Do any of you people know where these individuals learned to shoot? Private Joker?
    >Private Joker : Sir, in the Marines, sir!
    >Gunnery Sergeant Hartman : In the Marines! Outstanding! Those individuals showed what one motivated marine and his rifle can do! And before you ladies leave my island, you will be able to do the same thing!
