Ukraine, if Russia lost 500k they would have completely burned through all of their armored vehicles and artillery and would be reduced to charging Ukrainian lines in human waves, while the Ukrainians would still be capable of mechanized offensives. They could keep calling up men to suicide into Ukrainian lines if they wanted but it wouldn't accomplish anything strategically.

                Anonymous

What we see now, these human waves around Bakhmut are ex-cons. Wagner collected them from prisons and send them to die. They just had to deploy the troops behind them to stop them from retreating.
Who the frick cares about convicts in Russia? I believe 80% of the country is glad that they die the other 20% are in still prison and will be used in the next prison mobilisation phase.

                Anonymous

Anon they've already lost nearly 40k convicts in the recent actions on that front for very meager gains. It's not sustainable. Emptying your prisons into the military is not a cheat code to win a war.

                Anonymous

I'm glad they're having them all killed on the front though, much better than them walking out of prison into the world after Russia gets nuked.

                Anonymous

                Why not?
Until they can keep the 1:1 ratio their goal is to find enough people to send on the front. Who is better for that than a convict with no future? There are 600.000 people in prison. Let's say 200.000 will be drafted only to die. Isn't it enough?

No, you need actually competent soldiers. You'll notice that these Wagner convicts aren't really given any equipment beyond small arms, because Russia isn't willing to sacrifice anything significant to support them, especially given the tactic they're using. Sure, it definitely helps to have a lot of disposable light infantry to get blown up storming trenches, but it's not enough in itself to win the war.

700k men may have worked in an era where machine guns and set artillery pieces were the only real means of defense and assault, but a lot has changed in 100 years. Just look at what happened to Iraq. All Ukraine has been using this entire time were mostly the Western equivalent of old mothballed shit and it completely halted Russia so badly ziggers are trying to jerk off calling contending for one city near Russian borders a year later a massive victory. Unless Putin’s wider goal was depopulating all of Siberia this will just make Russia even more fricked than it already was, considering no country on the planet is doing all that well demographically speaking.
                >and given this is at least the tenth time such bold claims were made, I doubt putin would be able to successfully muster another 100k, let alone 700

    > A new Russian offensive into Kyiv is unlikely in the upcoming months. The report noted that Russian forces are not currently deployed in Belarus in a manner that would suggest a planned offensive into the Ukrainian capital anytime soon.

    > However, a large-scale military exercise in Belarus is planned for September. A new offensive against Kyiv proper would be more likely to occur at that time rather than in the next few months.

Because you need to think, anon, WHERE would those 700k troops come from? Did Russia empty full HALF of its bases? Not mobilization, they got 300k TOPS, from what I heard they in may have failed getting them, and at least half got sent to the front like already, then there is equipment, they hardly had equipment for those ~300k, rusty AK's and barely any vehicles
I have little doubt there are troops there, maybe they will even attack, but its nowhere near 700 thousand troops
And that's not even mentioning the terrain, you what that chunk of Ukraine through which they are supposed to go to get to Lviv? Swamps, swamps and forests, in fact its more swampy than usual because people there aren't keeping the beavers in check

I think the eastern part of this offensive, i.e. trying to retake some of the losses after the Kharkiv offensive, is realistic. Ukies seem stalled there and to a certain extent on the back foot. However the western part of the offensive is complete fantasy and would be a bloodbath for the Ruskies, western Ukraine is literally the worst place for them to attack because of a combination of terrain and the people there hating Russia with a burning passion. It literally makes less sense than just trying for Kiev again.

The Russians have utilized their huge artillery advantage to slaughter hohol conscripts, and have played rope a dope to minimize their own casualties. They can keep this up indefinitely, just keep firing and eroding conscript rabble. I doubt they go for a major attack, although they'll exploit growing hohol weakness if it falls in their lap. It's weird to me vatniks have stuck with this line from last June so stubbornly even as the war changed massively. You can listen to interviews from actual Russian soldiers and none of them think this is happening anymore, they're distressed by their lack of artillery support. The great slaughter was exaggerated to begin with but it is obviously not happening anymore if you're actually paying any attention to what's happening in the war.
