I'm not even from the US, I just know this sort of shit happens in my shit country too and it's usually clerical or some got spilt or dumped on a field but not recorded, and no-one remembers when or where.
60000 pounds is 26 tons. So one truck.

          Anonymous

26 tons out of a train car is a fricking anomaly, and they need to go find it. Either it spilled due to a loose valve and they can find evidence on the tracks, or it was stolen. This stuff was on the way to an explosives plant, it was the good shit and not some adulterated fertilizer.

            Anonymous

Meh. You would be surprised how often low explosives than can be mixed into high go missing in the industry kek, you just need to make sure that most of the time there is some sort of trail.
It's about reducing risk, you should never expect 100% security, especially when millions of tons of this stuff is used in low cost industries like farming to the tune of millions of tons a month.
You can go to a farm right now and steal ammonium nitrate from some farmers backyard, but you will probably die since you don't know what to do with it.

My grandfather played with poison that you'd recognize for a living and died of old age, you might be surprised. That is why I'm concerned, you could level a city block with this much and that's before you turn it into ANFO.

                Anonymous

I will say anon, if they had the drive, you will never stop someone who really wants to bomb people.
Explosives are just too easy to make with just a basic level of chemistry, and there are too many morons in the farming industry to maintain security over one of the cheapest fertilisers in the industry.

Glowies probably focus on making it as difficult to do it at scale as possible, 26tonnes going missing is a worry, but they probably know roughly where it was lost and would probably do some sort of investigation anon if that make you feel better.

the whole thing is, dude. Next time you're driving think about how easy it would be for a guy in an 18 wheeler to just decide to veer into oncoming traffic and flatten you. Or someone can just push you in front of a train at the station for no reason at all. honestly kind of weird to think about but also nice in a way to think all these people don't want to kill me at least not enough to do it. nice people.

Assuming it was malicious action and not just accidental spillage, how would you steal a literal train car of powdered explosive? That's assuming it's bagged and not just one giant sand filled bucket. You can't just pull a truck up beside it and throw it in the bed unnoticed. Can't just hijack the cart. I'm seriously trying to grasp how such a heist could be pulled.

Ammonium nitrate isn't regulated, it's not even legally classified as an explosive
Instant cold packs contain it, you can legally buy 50lb sacks of it
Amazon used to sell 50lb sacks for like 30 dollars but they stopped that like 4 years ago
It's one of the most widely used fertilizers in the world and literally millions of tons are used every year in the US, it's extremely common and easy to get, there's no need to steal it, you can just buy it
Walmart literally sells it in small amounts

Who cares, look at the dude who did the bombing in Nashville on Christmas, he had a shit ton of it and used it, receipts aren't what got him caught
Receipts also don't help really because it looks normal for people in areas where it's for sale to buy some extremely widely used fertilizer
That's like saying making molotov wienertails is hard because gas pumps track your purchases

The train car was a hopper, the bottom is inches off the ground. It's spread across hundreds of miles of gravel, you'll see it by fall by looking at the grass growth on the tracks.
