    6.5creedmore, 308 & 30-06

    >2) how to ensure their meat doesn't poison you?
Cook it and measure the temperature. Basically nuke it.

    3) shelf stable foods that aren't shit? (i.e. not ramen)
Happy Yak brand freeze dried foods
    Mountain House is okay too.
MREs are meh and have much worse shelf life.

    >4) long term food preservation?
Mine is a mixture of freeze dried food, MREs and canned food. Only have enough stockpiled for four adults for three months.

      5) garden and farming options?

      >Cook it and measure the temperature. Basically nuke it.
Can this then be preserved though?

And do you home can or just commercial?

As far as farming cattle go, pigs and goats would be ideal. They're very hardy and will eat anything.
The land surrounding a woodland cabin isn't going to be able to grow grain, it's not the midwest plains is it, nor would you be able to harvest and mill it. So you're left with root vegetable plots.
So long term for grain there is canned bread and canned bread pre-mix, canned pasta, canned hardtack, canned flour.

Rather than buy a big load of food to store for SHTF I'd suggest buying larger quantities of whatever shelf-stable foods you normal eat. In my house we eat a lot of pasta and a lot of curries so we can easily keep a few months of rice and flour in the pantry or a chest freezer, knowing that we'll cycle through it well before it goes off. Same for breakfast oats, protein powder and plenty of other foods.

    >Question for the BOG/BIG bros…what recent purchase have you made?
My power went out recently and I realized that if my phone died I had no connection to the news or entertainment. I recently bought a crank radio and four more lanterns for light. Figured the radio will be good for news and family entertainment when the power is out.

crank radio are kino, you can get emergency models with a variety of additional functions like torches and usb chargers
do you think you'd consider solar?

        >Consider solar
The radio can be powered by solar but I wanted a crank as a backup. It takes batteries too. Thankfully radios take very little energy to power.

I mean solar for the home

Not him but solar's a pretty big investment. There's a big difference between dropping $40 on a crank radio and dropping several grand on home solar and another few grand on batteries, even if you will eventually recoup the cost of solar if you're living in the same house long enough.

Actually, if the intended use case is just getting through a short power cut then you might be better off just investing in a battery storage system, then getting solar panels at some point down the line if you have the extra cash.

One tesla powerwall 2 (just using it as an example, there are much better value options if you shop around) has 13.5kWh of capacity which can supply the average house for 12 hours. If you shut down non-essentials then it would last much longer, especially if you can use gas or wood for heating and cooking.
They're expensive (about $8500 per powerwall, although there's a discount if you buy multiple) but they can potentially save you money if your electricity provider has a peak/off-peak pricing system (charge off-peak, run your home on the battery during peak). Here in NH one of the electricity providers is running a scheme where they'll install a pair of powerwalls in your for some minimal cost (like $50 month iirc) so long as you agree to let them use the capacity to supply the grid during peak times, in a blackout you they're all yours (although they're probably not going to be fully charged).

We’re shopping for land to build a home. We just moved to my wife’s hometown and are renting a house right now. Solar power is a must on the house we build.

Buy a powerbank and keep it plugged in somewhere out of the way?

Does anyone have that greentext documenting some europoor country going through war and the subsequent break down of society. I remember reading it years ago and I think it eventually was proven to be a larp but it was still informative. Sorry if I'm being vague.

I know the one you're talking about. It was Bosnia iirc.
I've heard plenty of people say it was a larp based on no city of the population he describes being caught up in a siege. Haven't checked the numbers myself to confirm one way or the other.
      Don't have it saved.

Definitely look into a solar charger. They tend to have several ports to accommodate electronics. Mine is about the size of one and a half smart phones, so not real bulky or obtrusive. Hangs great on the exterior of a tent or vehicle. Highly recommend.

I just got back from Nepal and one of the girls I was with had one that she'd hang off her pack while we walked. Angle wasnt great but it got more than enough sun to keep her phone and camera charged.

I've seen them around, they're about the size of a mobile phone right? So you could also leave it on a car dashboard.
I googled backpack solar charger to post an example but what I found was entirely unexpected: much larger and cover entire bag

Hers was kinda in between those two in size. Folded in half so she could have 1/2 sitting on top of her hiking pack where it got the best sun and the other half dangling down the back.

How to build a root cellar?
It's not a basement for canned and jarred food, it is built in such a way as to be temperature and humidity controlled to ensure that root vegetables can last 6 months on their own in it with no other preservation

What do you do when your shelf stable food is nearing expiration date? Just say frick it and keep it for another few years because it shouldn't matter anyway? Toss it? Actually eat it and rotate with fresh stuff?
On that last point I can't imagine my family eating the generally shitty food in non-SHTF situation, so 3 months supply times 3 people amount and I'll be eating it all by myself for almost a year round at some point.

If you aren't regularly eating your stockpile, just as a test of it, and thus depleting and replenishing it that way, you're an idiot. Letting it go bad is completely wasted money.

      depends what it is
if it is premade stuff like chilli or baked beans the expiration date should be respected
plus also if there are tomatoes in it the acid will rust the can
if its dry long life stuff it has the potential to last for decades

you should periodically eat and replenish it, if there is more than you can then try donating

I don't really stock food that isn't part of my usual diet. Rice goes into curry, beans into enchiladas, oats and dried fruits I eat for breakfast, my wife uses the flour for pasta or bread, etc.
The only exception is powdered milk but that's got an indefinite shelf life so who cares.

We have some Mountain House and MREs but we also go camping regularly enough to cycle through them well before theyre ever about to expire.
