Understandable, but the best part of a 3d printer is once you have it the only cost is plastic and time. My buddy has like 20 glock 19 frames ready to slap a parts kit in at any time.

The annoying thing is the rails for them

              Anonymous

              No rails required:
              DB380, EAA Witness, Hi-Point CF380, C9, JCP40, JHP45, Tokarev TT3, M&P Shield 9, M&P 9/9L/9C, Taurus PT-111G2, G2C, G3C, G3, 709 Slim, SP2022, FNS9/40, FNX9/40, Ruger SR9, SR9C, Beretta PX4
And that's just the "real" guns, doesn't include mostly DIY shit like the Dirty Harry and Private Eye revolvers, the UD380, the FGC9/WTF9/MOD9 etc, the "chairleg" carbon fiber M-11, VP22 bolt-action pistol, the Yeet-22, HD22C, EZ22 (comedy plastic AR bolt, pure gold).

Or you can just make your own rails if you're so inclined, the actual specs and drawings are there for making S&W SD/SW rails and of course everything Glonk.

How do all of those work with plastic frames and steel slides? That’s not a recipe for success.

                Anonymous

They work the way they did from the factory. Look at shit like the M&P 9, the Taurus Millennium series (G2C, etc), the Ruger SR9, they're just plastic frames with parts that drop and pin in place. People have been building these for over 4 years now, they work extremely well and when made correctly they can hold up for thousands of rounds.

A lot also use metal rails within the frame. It’s not metal riding directly on plastic.

That listing comes with a CR touch ABL sensor. I agree more expensive printers are better but anyone who's not a moron can figure out how to get good prints on a chinesium printer.

so you mean just milling out metal?

      Anonymous

Supposedly there are a few people who have made attempts at casting/milling the FGC-9, but I have yet to see one finished. There's that video of a guy talking about starting that project on YouTube with no updates so far. There's nothing stopping you from doing it if you have the equipment, but the whole point is to be able to make something relatively cheaply and quickly with little to no actual machining work.

Are there generally considered "best" 3D printed guns out there?

That depends entirely on what sort of conditions you define as "best", but I would say DB Firearms designs are some of the most durable looking PCC/Pistol builds, namely the DB Alloy, which uses metal plates to reinforce the lower where it mounts to the MAC upper. I'm currently building one in 5.7.

        Anonymous

Im impressed with a lot of the mac frames coming out. I dont know if any of them are good but they look nice.
Are any of the designs out there close to commercial quality? I dont mean like is the fgc9 just as good as an AR, but is it possible to 3d print something that would rival what you can buy in a store?

          Anonymous

          >I dont know if any of them are good but they look nice.
they're literally all good quality if you know what you're doing. all of them are tested and the parts doing the heavy lifting are all machined
          >Are any of the designs out there close to commercial quality?
damn near, and it doesn't really even matter because you can print a new frame for $3. a properly set and equipped ender 3 can make reasonably high quality frames that last for thousands of rounds, likely more than that. DB alloy is relatively new, macdaddy is years old with resounding success, SVTR is years old with resounding success. MAC frames are here to stay and will probably never stop being a thing because they're piss easy, potentially very cheap for what you get, and function well.

I know they wont blow up in my hand. I guess most of the videos ive seen are just people mag dumping into the berm. I get that quality is going to vary a lot based on how skilled the person printing it is but id still like to see like an accuracy test or someone talk about fit and finish or something.
Slambang shotguns can run great but i wouldnt call one quality you know?
Im not hating, i think theyre really cool and i just got an ender 3. Im trying to learn more about the different designs and capabilities out there.

            >but is it possible to 3d print something that would rival what you can buy in a store?
I see no reason why a glock frame from a well-calibrated printer would be any worse than an OEM frame.

I dont know how or what glocks are actually made of. Im assuming some type of injection molding nylon. Ive got no idea how that would actual compare side by side with a 3d printed frame.

              Anonymous

              >an accuracy test or someone talk about fit and finish

Accuracy and fit & finish are directly related to how well your prints come out (ie printer tuning), and how well you yourself can actually shoot.

Got any tips or source material for someone that wants to learn?

Kits, start with shitty little kits. They save you from investing in any specialty tools right away by doing the hard parts for you, but they'll still give you a feel for what you're doing without busting your wallet wide open. Check out Tandy 4180 and 44455, both highly recommended. You don't need much to do a kit, you can slap one together with nothing but what's in the bag if you're so inclined. As you start to pick up tools and ideas, you can still apply them to kits to make more impressive stuff without needing to go the full-monty and doing it all from scratch. Even the stuff you make from a cheap kit is still leather, it's hard wearing and tough, a $10 kit can still make something that lasts a lifetime and if it ever busts a stitch you'll be comfortable fixing it.

Tandy Leather is king and has been for a long damn time, and they have stores in most major cities in the United States and Canada. They're a great resource, not always top-tier tools/materials or the best prices, but it's a one-stop-shop you can trust to have what you need 99% of the time, and a pretty solid chance of an old guy hanging out who's been doing this longer than you've been alive.

          Anonymous

Thanks for the advice! Pic related is some of the leather working tools, supplies, and firearm paraphernalia I snagged at an estate auction so I should mostly be set with tools, too bad the prior owner was put into assisted living and his house was rat e moist to say the least and thus when picking up everything the basement had multiple fans, dehumidifiers, and sub pumps running to remove moisture. Many tools have rust but I think they should all be salvageable.

I live in a rural setting so the drive to the nearest leather store is 1-2 hours one way but thankfully there should be some farms and mom&pop slaughter houses that are sourced for leather. I even have possible source of bison leather so i’m greatly looking forward to that.

I think my greatest trouble for the craft now is finding the time outside of work, commute, and general responsibilities. Hopefully once I organize my workroom things and with winter I will have more time to dedicate.

          Cheers!

Swift links for ARs are very common. It takes less than an hour to print and costs like 5 cents. Real SOTs have printed and function tested them on video too, if you don’t trust randos on the internet. In terms of a full gun, there are hybrid metal/printed tube SMGs from professor parabellum that use a AR trigger group. It’s “purely academic” but set up for full auto

I would suggest looking at "Moms Demand Full Auto" and "Yankee Boogle" for drop in auto sears for ARs. For Glock switches you can look at "Giggle Box" and "Glock InvisaSear". You can also find M16 drilling jigs to drill the 3rd hole on a lower. There are certainly more options. All of these are on Odysee.

Lastly, here is the hybrid tube/printed SMG. Professor parabellum has been publishing sheet metal plans for well over a decade. Printing makes part of it easier.

There's a few binary and "forced reset" triggers out there. And 3dp 'coathooks" have been around for a minute.

3d printers are very useful, I have printed tools, jigs, parts for machines that aren't made anymore. Like parts for garage door, or incubator for my chickens eggs. Toys for my children, trinkets for the wife. After all that, to me, being able to print glock frames, 3011 frames, among others, is just the cherry on top. Currently printing a scorpion evo. Although, I am looking a getting a better print, probably a bambulabs p1s. I'm tired of my ender 3, I spend more time fixing and calibrating the thing than using it. Does anyone have experience with bambulabs?

      currently i have an ender 3, an sv06+, and a p1s
the p1s is a very nice printer, I've seen 6 minute benchys on modded ones, it prints at high quality and high speed. main complaint is how god damn long it takes for it to start a print with flow tests every single time
Also, bambu is extremely proprietary, I worry if they'll still support the printer in 5 years, but for now, it's an excellent printer
if you're looking to save a buck, get an sv06, it's the best cheap bedslinger, if you're looking for the best printer for what you need, p1s
oh, and Orcaslicer is literally just better BambuSlicer and you should use that

Both should be treated as tools serving their own purposes.
It’s best to have as many tools at your disposal to achieve the most.

yes, a milling machine is nice to have if you want to bring your 3d printed parts to precise dimensions and good surface finishes
machined or sanded ABS is unbearably pleasant to touch
