With proper shot placement, any claiber is lethal. That said, you'll probably want God's own .45ACP if you're going up against crackheads

yes, modern humans are mostly immune to it

It's not too weak but a ton of hollowpoints for that caliber don't work right.
Either use FMJ, JHPs that underexpand or those screwdriver tip bullets.

No, at worst its anemic 9mm in its defense loads

    >Is this cartridge too weak for self-defense?
As other anons have said it's fine (though yeah get decent loads like those XDs). Like 97% of self-defense usage is <10yd, and a majority still under 5. Almost nobody is armored and even if they are it's not a magic shield that covers 100% of their body. 380 does have less energy but it's also low recoil and easier to shoot quickly and accurately. It also shoots well from very small guns, which in turn are easy to conceal and carry comfortably, which makes it more likely you'll do it. It's not a snowflake at all and is as cheap as anything to practice with short of 9mm or 22.

For a full size HG when concerned more about animals innawoods or on the farm I prefer 9mm or up, but there is nothing wrong with 380 for basic personal defense. The constant "need bigger boolet" trends are dumb.

I thought 380 had really snappy recoil tho

Sure if it's in a micro, admittedly it's it's largest market, but if in a compact or full size it's rather pleasant.

        >I thought 380 had really snappy recoil tho
"Recoil" is just felt momentum, which in typical handguns is primarily a function of plain momentum and the mass of the gun. 380 has inherently low momentum, 68gr*1300fps or 90gr*1025fps or whatever are just much lower numbers then 9mm or higher have.

Of course, if you use that lower momentum to make an even tinier gun then you can end up with the same felt momentum as a bigger gun with a bigger bullet. But for two similar size guns, an ultracompact 9mm and same size 380, the 380 is going to shoot much, much softer. Having the option of a tinier gun then would be controllable or safe in a bigger caliber is just that, an option.

That comes from a lot of the guns--like my Beretta 85F--being straight blowback.

basically another form of taking advantage of lesser recoil of the cartridge

Thats cause most 380 pistols are straight blowback
Look up videos of people shooting the P365-380, which is not straight blowback
It looks like theres no recoil at all

My 380s do have a bit more felt recoil then my 9mm but that's not a fair comparison as both my 380s are micro pistols with very little mass and my 9mm is an oversized pistol that's front heavy.

.380s in plastic frames made in really small packages so you can throw them in gym shorts are very snappy just light light frame revolvers and annoying to shoot a lot of the time. Get a full metal .380 or one designed around the power of the cartridge and its like having cheat codes on for a 9mm gun.

It's hard to find ammo that meets FBI spec, and most guns in it are limited in capacity, these make it less than ideal, but it's obviously not "too weak".

Some loadings are good, some are not.

My Beretta 84 has very mild recoil, and a 13 shot capacity. Comfortable to carry too.

Modern loads routinely beat old 38sp
    And they’re hollow point
    It’s honestly a devastating round by 20th c standards

No point in having a gun that is so uncomfortable to carry you leave it at home. .380 and similar mouse guns are great in that they enable someone to carry a gun when they otherwise wouldn't and that's worth way more than stopping power.

    It's fine
Fun fact, most 9mm leaves a 3 inch barrel at 380 velocities.

I hate that I can only have one handgun for self defense. I got a glock 19 because if I only have one gun I would rather have 15 rounds and a longer barrel than something small and easy to conceal.

With low capacity yes, but with plenty of ammo and good shot placement then weak but okay.

No. It's about the bare minimum in a modern context, but there's a good argument to be made for making follow-up shots faster and more easily than one could with a 9 or .45 if those rounds are coming out of a small gun.

If it's the gun you can carry in what you're gonna be comfortable wearing in a given day and you're well-practiced with it, carry whatever. In a crisis I'd be a lot happier with a guy with a .22 magnum revolver who goes through a couple boxes a week practicing than a dude with a 9mm micro he shoots at trash twice a year.
