I first read it in the moronic ass "zombie survival guide" from the early '00s, where they indicate which guns work best against zombies. It's full fudd-tier, the author says 5.56 won't work against zombies, that you need .308, and of course the fuddlore about the .22 also. It's almost kino nostalgia at this point.

I honestly don't know who was the first to say the "bouncing around" lie but I'm certain the assassin bit dates to the Depression when wops and paddies were killing people with whatever cheap guns they could find including 22s. The bouncing bit may come from applying "knowledge" of ricochets to bones and thinking that they behave like concrete when shot

    >Man the frick up.
Grandparents and uncle used to live in AK. Uncle was a cop, pretty high up in Anchorage PD.
When I used to go visit as a kid during the summers, sometimes I'd get to read his case files he'd bring home from work while he was sleeping (only 4 hours of real night max during the summer sometimes so your cycle gets weird, I obvs. I didn't work as a 12 year old so I was awake at odd times).
I've seen 8x10 color pictures of the aftermath when the bear is hungry. One poor guy might not have been dead before starting to eat. It ate his ass and thighs, and that's it. There were marks on his back where the claws were, but no punctures or trauma around the head, spine, or neck.

From the file, the theory was that he died from blood loss, and that the bear just pushed him to the ground, held him there with a front paw in the middle of his back, and just started tearing into his ass and thighs, eating him alive. It probably wasn't very quick.
If I lived in bear country I'd say a 308 wouldn't be a bad idea.

Bears aren’t starving they are just bad at killing. They’re awkward

          Anonymous

They are not bad at killing they just don't care to snap your neck like most predators. Because they don't need to. There is literally nothing that is going to be strong enough push a mature bear off to escape. The number of animals capable of inflicting serious injuries to a bear in a scuffle are very low. You're basically a free meal + play toy for the bear.

Also to the morons (obvious bait, frick ya muddah) who are talking about the b***h who killed a grizzly with a .22, she shot it about 100 times and it was asleep when she did it. The first shot disoriented the bear and after that she just had to keep peppering it point blank. You're not going to do that with a fully conscious bear.

            Anonymous

Thats not at all what happened, it was awake and went down in the first shot. She just kept shooting it to be sure, but it did in fact pile up with the very first .22L

              Anonymous

Wolverines, honey badgers and other non-apex predators are typically meaner than apex predators, especially when startled, precisely because they are weaker and more vulnerable.

Because they are predated upon by other creatures, they tend to avoid fighting unless something sneaks up on them, at which point they will attack with the fury of an animal backed into a corner, because they think they are. They usually lose fights with higher predators, the cases where they succeed are more noticeable though, which is where they get their "vicious" reputation from.

        >predators kill their prey fast so they don't get hurt
is complete horseshit. wishful thinking from misanthropic vegans who want to believe that humans are somehow uniquely cruel.

Whether it's lions, housecats, monitors, crocodiles, baboons, bears, crows, or just about any other predator you can think of, they eat their prey alive. There are innumerable wildlife videos proving this.

          Anonymous

          >any other predator you can think of, they eat their prey alive
I've never seen or heard of a tiger eating its prey alive. They always go for the neck. Yet again, what creature on this planet could possibly withstan 600 lbs of pure bloodthirsty muscle? Not to mention the claws on those things. I've also seen lionesses go for the neck on buffaloes. They don't do it because of compassion or some gay reddit virtues, but because killing an animal of that size quickly and efficiently is key to their survival. Why deplete your valuable energy resources or potentially risk getting mortally wounded when you can ACK your prey? As for crows and housecats, people don't care about small shit and vermin suffering.

            Anonymous

depends on the animal. Cats go for the neck because they can’t win prolonged struggles against most of their natural prey. Still, that neck shot doesn’t necessarily mean the prey is killed outright. It’s more to paralyze their prey than to just kill outright. The animal doesn’t actually give a frick about its prey and cats will toy with small animals until they die, even if they have no intention of eating them

Also, "suitable means" is just political jargon as they can't legally force you to have something for wich you need a non shall issue permission. Who actually calls te shots for that interpretation of the law is the local police and fauna authorities who in certain periods of intense polar bear activities have refused tourists permission to travel outside Svalbard without a gun that was either loaned to them with the proper license or accompanied by a licensee.

There are many in our society who believe the life of an animal has equal or greater value than that of a human. I disagree. A bear is a wild animal, that when not threatening human life, is a wonderful sight. However, when I encounter bears that act aggressively by popping their teeth, woofing, swinging their head from side to side, charging, etc. I shoot them. I do not give them a prolonged chance to kill my wife, children, myself or any one that is with me. When I encounter bears (which I do several times per year) that run at my sight or smell, they are safe from me because I know I am safe from them. When they show aggression to humans, it is irresponsible to let them live as they will eventually permanently harm or kill someone. I don’t care that our governmental wild life agencies are protecting bears. They are generally misguided in this tactic. The notion that bears are a spiritual, magical life form that has value over human life, is a point of view that not only comes from the typical tree hugger groups/mindset, but it is coming from various fish and game agencies, more and more often. I choose to protect human life over animal life, period. The notion that bears were here before us and therefore have rights to maul us, is not only untrue, but even if it was true, I am here NOW and assert my right to be so.

I hike, ride horses, hunt and fish in grizzly country. When relying on a handgun, I carry a 500 Linebaugh or 475 Linebaugh with heavy hard cast, flat nosed bullets. It hammers grizzlies. Such a revolver weighs no more than a standard Ruger Black Hawk, but has the killing power of a moderately powerful rifle cartridge. I find the big heavy X frame revolvers (500 S&W and 460 S&W) too heavy for hiking in steep country all day, but they do possess incredible power. However, if I am going to carry a handgun that weighs 5+ pounds, I’d just as soon carry a 6 pound rifle chambered in 45-70 that has a longer sight radius, more power and is shoulder mounted.

        >500 Linebaugh

REALLY unimpressive and nowhere near the power of "moderately powerful rifle cartridge", assuming we're talking about full power rifle cartridges like .308 and not intermediate ones like .223. Especially when it's in a hard to shoot wrist buster fudd canon 5 shooter. A 14" AR-15 would be the infinitely better choice.

Having killed dozens of bear and guided hunters for dozens more, I have firsthand knowledge. Additionally, I have been hanging around bear guides all my adult life and between us, we’ve seen over a thousand bears killed. We have come to some consensus on the best tools and methods of killing bears with guns.
If I carry a rifle in grizzly country, which I do often, I carry a lever action 45-70 for summer horse pack trips, hikes and fishing excursions. I carry a revolver chambered in 500 Linebaugh too, along with the rifle. The handgun stays on my person in a shoulder holster and the rifle stays on the horse or in camp, unless I am feeling the need to have it in my hands, which does and has happened and has kept me from being injured/killed more than once. I have used both revolvers and rifles on bears, several times.

I don’t think there are many bears in my locale but if I ever go innawoods I will justify the latest build. .

My friend in CO does the same, well he has some other huge wheel gun.

I would have no problem defending myself against a black bear attack (and have done so) with the proper 9MM ammo. I prefer a more powerful/bigger cartridge, but the 9MM will get it done, even on grizzlies, if you take their brain with a flat nosed, non-expanding bullet. Of course, making a brain shot under such duress, will take practice and cool nerves.

There was a recent (brown?) bear home invasion and the homeowner killed it with a 9mm.

Could kill a grizzly with a rock but I’ll go ahead and let try it first.

    Question
Would napalm buckshot shells be good for bear defense

Would magdumping 5,56mm work reliably enough?

Assuming you get a penetrating hit in a vital region, why not? It's not like they're invincible.

bears are fuzzy sweet animals and you don't need guns for them

I'm no hunter but I'd feel really unsafe in grizzly country with anything less than .45-70. those claws will disembowel you with one fricking slap

Why do people even argue against using larger calibers for bear they got a lot more blood, bigger vitals, have big bones in front of those vitals, and might be more moronicly determined than a crackhead with a knife. I'm not sure how I'd comfortable carry a .44 down my pants leg in the wilderness but if the threat of a bear is serious enough to consider then it should be considered seriously.

Because anons are fricking moronic. Have you not seen people saying that you don’t need anything more than 308 for African big 5?

cause muh 14" AR in .223 that i spent 5 grand on can do anything, the internet people told me so and i don't want to admit that while it's a very handy gun with a lot of things going for it, it's not ideal for every situation, and i'll deny that animals pose any threat to me with this marvel of modern(ish) technology because i'm not willing to admit that i need to get something more powerful to deal with threats outside the design parameters of my gun.

The weird thing to me is those people could just swap in a 10/12" 458 socom upper and have something legitimately useful for a bear defense purpose.

For black bear 5.56 is fine.

Let’s see, a .223 has about the same amount of ft lbs as a .44 mag, but 30 rounds of it won’t shred a bear while 2 rounds of .44 mag will? Makes sense, Black person. And then there’s still super handy 16“ or 18“ .308 AR-10’s, who’ll completely take any bear whether brown or black to pound town. I genuinely wonder if fudds like you were dropped on the head when they were little. Or maybe you were chipping off lead paint from your balcony and eating it or some shit.

Usually Bella twin using a .22 long is used an extreme example towards morons who even think .308 is too small.

      Normal foster slugs.
Black magic slugs have massive recoil, and aren't water proof.
10z foster slugs have been killing bear for a century
