The thing with pcp air rifles, it that the compressor will cost hundreds of dollars. You cant just get a compressor from Home Depot and be good. These things need scuba compressors that generate thousands, not hundreds, of PSI.

Hand pumps used to be like $300, but they're a lot less since Hatsan and other turkshit got into the game.

        Anonymous

Yeah, but hand pumps are so incredibly slow and tiring to use that you'll hate your life. Heck even the compressors which cost a few hundred bucks are dreadfully slow.
The practical options are getting a serious compressor which costs way over a grand, or having a dive shop fill your tanks. That's cheap, though it has a disadvantage in that most dive shops won't fill above 3500psi while some airguns and tanks can use higher.

          Anonymous

Hand pumps aren't bad for hunting since you don't fire that many shots. I can see them sucking pretty bad for target shooting.

          >pumps are so incredibly slow
I wonder if a sort of gas generator would work in place of a compressor: take a pellet, stick in a chamber, close it, light it electrically or with a primer, pellet reacts and slowly burns or decompose into gas, pressurizing a tank. Would be expensive in the long run probably. I wonder if there's actually something that can sustain the reaction up to high pressure.

No, I think anon is on to something here.
How about an exothermic powder? You could even create a combination of gas-producing powder, ignition, and even the projectile. All the gun would have to do is trigger the igniton.

dive shops aren't the only place to get non-oxygen tanks filled though, brewery supply places do co2 but thats "food grade" stuff. welding supply maybe? they like tanks.

            Anonymous

Just get the compressor and plink in your basement. "Dreadfully slow" is still only about a minute for an onboard cylinder (much smaller than a dive tank)

            Anonymous

I deal with welding supply places a lot for my work. They generally don't fill tanks in-house, they exchange your empty tank for their full one. Getting a big nitrogen tank from a welding shop and then using that to refill your airgun could be a solid plan though you'd need the correct regulator/valve for doing so. Welding nitrogen is very very cheap. But the problem is the standard pressures welding shops tend to have. The most common nitrogen tanks are 3000 psi. That's usable for airguns but it's a bit on the low side. There are also 6000 psi tanks. Those would be fantastic, with a regulator you could fill 3500-4500 psi as your gun requires. But the trouble with 6k nitrogen tanks is that they're heavy AF due to how thick they are so they're a big hassle to move around, and most places don't stock that high pressure and have to order it in. It's also a lot more expensive to rent or buy the tank, the regulator you'd need is also expensive.

You want to use dive shops because it’s a rich man’s hobby and they treat your tanks really well and the air is for breathing, which means they pass it through more filters before it hits your tank, and is better and more consistent on the internals if you get really into airguns than air from eg paintball shops.
Please don’t fill your airguns with nitrogen they are designed to be used with regular air

also “dive shops don’t fill high enough” is extremely outdated device in my experience, i’ve never met a dive shop that won’t fill you to 4500 psi which is where the high end air tanks top out for scba tanks

                >Please don’t fill your airguns with nitrogen they are designed to be used with regular air
Anon, regular air is 70% nitrogen, just exactly what sort of harm do you think will come from using it? Especially when you yourself bring up consistency? The mixture of air varies. Nitrogen is nitrogen

                >but but but purity
Even the shittiest grade of industrial nitrogen is more pure than "air". And if you really have your panties in a twist about it you can buy special high-purity nitrogen. It costs about 3x what the regular stuff costs but it's purified to the extent that it is used for calibrating laboratory instruments.

also “dive shops don’t fill high enough” is extremely outdated device in my experience, i’ve never met a dive shop that won’t fill you to 4500 psi which is where the high end air tanks top out for scba tanks

YMMV of course. Mine only fills to 3500. I still use them for the convenience though. I don't trust the safety of chinkshit compressors and I'm not willing to shell out for a proper one. Meanwhile the local dive shop is convenient and fills up my "Great White" tank quickly.

you know come to think of it i’m not sure why nitrogen wouldn’t work fine, the gas constants are within five percent… i may just be repeating old lore from my early days airgunning
surprised about your dive shop, across three states the last decade i haven’t run into a dive shop that didn’t hit 4500 (ie it’s been 10 years since I had the problem)

              >what are higher-end features that matter?
Accuracy. Trigger feel. The quality of the regulator and whether or not you can adjust it easily--note that many PCP airguns aren't regulated at all. Some have the ability to change barrels so you can swap different calibers--that may or may not be important to you.

I don't know of any super shortcuts for learning but the Pyramid Air and Airguns of Arizona websites have a lot of good articles in their blog, reviews, and on their "resources" page. I've found the Youtube channels AirArmsHuntingSA, Ted's HoldOver, and Squirrel Hunter Channel to be informative without a lot of BS.

Hatsan is Turkish IIRC and I've never owned Hatsan stuff but haven't heard anything too horrible about them. Air Venturi I've heard of but never owned and I found this in their "about us":
        >Air Venturi is the importer for leading international airgun, ammo and accessory manufacturers such as Air Arms, Ataman, Beeman, Diana, Evanix, Feinwerkbau, Haendler & Natermann, and Kral. As a distributor Air Venturi also carries a full line of products from leading local manufacturers including AirForce, Anschutz, Benjamin, Beretta, Browning, BSA, Colt, Crosman, Daisy, Gamo, Hawke, Smith & Wesson, Tanfoglio, Umarex, Walther, Webley, Weihrauch, Winchester and many more.
Basically they're an importer. YMMV on their stuff because they're an importer. I trust the Pyramyd Air blog more than anyone when it comes to airguns. IIRC he isn't afraid to say it's shit or it broke when it's the case. And he's a collector of air rifles too so he's not some random "d00d look at this thing I totally didn't get paid to write a good review of" guy.

Hatsan is good. I have the flashpup and it’s a really great rifle. It shoots half inch groups at 50 yards with no wind. I also have an fx carbine that shoots just as good but the hatsan has more power behind it so wind holds aren’t as bad and it certainly hits harder. I’ve shot a lot of rifles and I hatsans are the best bang for the buck.
Pcp rifles have their place even over suppressed 22s.

For Hatsan I have a Blitz (.25), two Flashes (.22, .25), and two Air Tacts (.177, .25). They're all fun, cheap, and haven't failed me yet. Their refurbished deals are really good.

I only have one Air Venturi, an Avenger bullpup in .177. It's consistent but a little awkward. It's fun though, and never seems to run out of air.

I think Benjamin Marauders have the best triggers near that price range, and the JTS Airacuda Max has the most features.

I switched to .22 magnum and haven't looked back.

Looks like the Air Venturi Avenger you've got your eye on? Unless you want to shell out 300 bucks on a chinkshit HPA pump, it's gonna be a pain in the ass to fill it up.

A good quality break barrel(Diana350)or a mediocre PCP? It's the question I have on my mind for months.

Spring guns are shit. The powerful ones have a spring that recoils hard BEFORE the pellet leaves the barrel.

Dianna 350 is a quality gun I want to have one day and it's a spring gun.

Also springers are autonomous you don't need any air to pump only need your lead pellets , I'm not a hunter all I want is to punch holes in paper target.

I've got a gamo swarm in 22. It's fine for plinking and shooting squirrels at 20 yards. The magazine makes it more fun to shoot and you don't need anything but pellets to make it work.

my father bought one against my advice, the thing couldn't group to save its life even after being rebarreled.
Not just user error either we had multiple people try and group the thing and it just did not hit what it was aimed at.
You could definitely plink with it at 20 yards but I'd never use it for anything more serious than that (such as FT or hunting).

Back when i was noguns and into air rifles, gamo had a reputation for selling bad supersonic spring guns. The trouble was that pellets have no mass and quickly transitioned to subsonic which made them tumble like crazy. I would hazard a guess that is what is causing your troubles. Load down the gun with heavy slugs so that it stays subsonic.

Yep, and around the 2010s everyone (especially Gamo) was shilling MUH VELOCITY on the box and d00d muh super light PBA alloy pellets which inevitably were a bitch to stabilize at the velocity (and probably twist rate) the air rifle used. Funny enough the lead would shoot mostly fine. But now that we're mostly through the "holy shit muh velocity look at the box!!!!" phase, we probably have even better accuracy than before since we're not going crazy over velocity and instead at least attempting to give good groups.

Spring guns are shit. The powerful ones have a spring that recoils hard BEFORE the pellet leaves the barrel.

IIRC the new gas piston ones are supposed to improve on that? I know my Gamo Swarm doesn't jump as hard as my old 2010-2012 Gamo I bought used years ago. And it doesn't "TWANNNNNNKK" as loud either.

    >Oh also especially fuck Gamo, absolute shit rifles
I thought so too with my old 2010s Gamo but I like my Swarm in .22 as well. I don't shoot it outside of backyard range usually but it's fun. A little hold sensitive IIRC and god forbid you forget you're dry; you'll screw the zero of the scope up from the piston slamming on an empty "chamber". Did that one once. Loudest fucking noise I've ever heard an air rifle make. Holy shit I thought I shot something. Nope.

Good quality like Weihrauch HW97K? That's the kind of gun you hand down to your grandkids

Spring guns are shit. The powerful ones have a spring that recoils hard BEFORE the pellet leaves the barrel.

That's part of the fun. The best guns start recoiling about 30 minutes before you pull the trigger.

Technically there's a PCP carnivore too, based on the BT65. The springer one is the Mod 135 carnivore. I have the mod 135 and like it, but I had to cock it with two hands at first.

Fuck yeah you should get. IMHO everyone should own an air rifle for hunting, if they're into hunting. In case of another presidential-induced ammo shortage like during Trump's first election and during his bid for re-election, air rifles like these are never gonna experience any sort of ammo shortage.
