21st Century Hobart's funnies

Its quite clear that drones of all types are increasingly important on the battlefield. There's many types serving different needs but what can we expect in the near future? What niche roles can we expect drones to be developed for?

Lets brainstorm some wacky drone ideas and wacky attachments for drones.

Id like to see a drone that can ferry AT mines and drop them where required. Bonus if the mines can burrow and conceal themselves.

Drone with a metal detector on the bottom for automated mine sweeping.

Even if all it did was drop a little flag in an area with a likely signal it could speed up the process

Imagine ten drones flying to your minefield at night and disabling them. Very spooky

Drones open up a new age of chemical warfare. Big issue with deploying a chemical weapon on the ground is that the dispersal is shit, especially if it's a heavier-than-air compound. Start spraying it from a drone travelling at a very specific height, at a very specific speed and you can cropdust a huge area with the right concentration.

How about a drone mothership that can carry 12-36 smaller kamikaze drones specifically to target aircraft on an airfield.

The mothership could carry the smaller ones to within striking distance then deploy the smaller drones that would be piloted to destroy the aircraft on the deck, in hangers etc. The smaller drones would need a pretty small warhead to disable/destroy aircraft on the ground.

Arsenal? Liberty? This must be the work of...THE PATRIOTS!

But on a serious note, you'd never be able to fly this over a modern battlefield. Unless you were directly bombing mudhut peasants, this thing would eat MANPADs like vatniks eat each other's wieners.

        Or, in other words,

"Arsenal is far from impregnable...it needs full air, sea, and land support to function efficiently. Against a large attack force, without support, Arsenal is nothing more than a gigantic coffin."

Of course, if Russia's taught us anything it's that, "Charades usually are humorous."

drones that can put down a smoke screen or other chemicals such as defoliants
you could rig a drone to drop some smoke grenades but you'd lose out on the drones ability to spread the smoke
You could jerry rig a blowing device and some smoke producing chemicals to put down a screen from lower to ground
hide the movement of your own boys, confuse or distract the enemy or blind the enemy.

drones could also be used to deliver supplies to right up the front lines. If a unit is running our of food, medicine or ammunition but can't be safely reached over land.

No idea how easy it is to derail a train but could a drone could carry some kind of wedge or similar attachment capable of derailing a train? The drone would have to be able to accurately place the device on the tracks or the device itself would have to maneuver itself into position after being dropped by the drone.

They exist but need to be bolted to the rail.

It'll be cheaper just to blow the track

It's surprisingly difficult to derail a train with explosives.

A relatively small thermite payload could absolutely be deployed and ignited via drone to tactically destroy lengths of rail. It would actually be so easy that I'm surprised nobody has done it yet.

        From the vid in

It's surprisingly difficult to derail a train with explosives.

it seems you need to destroy a significant portion of track on both sides to guarantee success, thermite could work though I suppose. The other issue is that using explosives leaves a visible gap in the line which could be identified before any train has a chance to go over it. Hence why I was wondering if some other device like a wedge could be used to derail.

why not just use these for buildings?

Dumb question. Military rail is a high value target that is relatively vulnerable to this form of attack. Buildings are low value targets that are not.

How about a network of drones designed to operate behind enemy lines with a charger drone to keep the others juiced up. The charging drone would land on a high structure or in a remote area, deploy solar panels and charge up a large battery. The other drones in the field can return for a charge when needed and then head back out. It would have to change location fairly regularly and self destruct if tampered with or discovered.

Im surprised we havnt seen more development of tilt rotor Osprey style drones. Pick up, drop off, loiter, fly further and hover.

There are plenty of vtol hybrid meme designs in the civilian and hobby drone sectors. They don't serve any real world purpose.

A lifting body is dead weight whenever the aircraft is moving below the stall speed of the wing shape. So basically you only use a fixed wing design when your drone needs to fly long distance to/from target, loiter continuously for long periods without refueling/recharging, carry heavy payloads, or some mix of these missions. Drones that need to do these things need to be larger than something infantry can transport, which is why you see all of the infantry using little DJI style quads and all of the larger drones are fixed wing.

Hybrid designs don't really have a mission. The Osprey is for flexible carrier ops and you just don't need anything similar in drone form.
