>The new service rifle is 2 lbs heavier with a shorter barrel

There is no earthly or unearthly reason for why a ~16" barrel rifle weighing sub 5 lbs unloaded isnt standard issue besides bribery

You can blame a collective incompetence by the government.

What was wrong with the old service rifle?

the question is why would you invent this shit and spend billions on it when .308 exists

        the m14 had its time

because they wanted a better BC and better velocities than .308

the improvement over .308 is marginal

marginal improvements was basically the only thing possible for the m5 project tho. what major improvements can be made over the existing m4?

The increase in weapon weight over previous versions is negligible.

2lbs over an m4 isn't negligible. it's noticeable and degrades performance

100 fps more velocity at 500 yards is negligible, especially when we're considering the goal of the project which is to defeat body armor. if you're at a distance where the .277 performs better than a .308 with similar bullet tech, then you aren't gonna be penning a level 4 wonderplate anyway

                This.
The only good thing to come out of this program has been the lighter and cooler plastic ammo, everything else is a giant waste of time and money.

Frick you SIG lobbyist. I worked hard for my money and the government should use my taxes to pay off the debt for something useful. Not your trillion dollar .308

Can your 16" barrel, weighing sub 5 lbs unloaded rifle punch a hole through PLA soldiers' chest?
