If that had been the goal, the pilot would have approached differently. Coming in the way he did he lost sight of the drone and tried to get away by pulling up abruptly, then he slammed into it.
The fact that we haven't seen the plane afterwards implies the damage to the fighter was pretty bad.

OK, if the goal was to bring the drone down by ramming it why were they also dumping fuel on it and why did they miss it so many times. The goal was clearly to harass the drone and convince it to either leave or crash itself via operator error reacting to the Russian maneuvers. Instead the Russians freaking rammed it which is a very silly thing to do if you are in a jet with missiles and want to shoot down an unarmed propeller plane with a heat signature.

Yea, but to continue the metaphor, the Russians drove the wrong way down the 4 lane highway that separates them from the dog, in front of the neighbor's doorbell camera, with their car to try and kill it "accidentally" by running it over, which is almost as bad since it's only plausibly deniable if you're a complete fricking moron who has should have their license pulled and significantly more moronic.

There is a big difference politically between harassing a drone resulting in an "accidental" crash, and shooting down a rivals aircraft in international airspace. The Russians can't risk turning it into open season on thier aircraft's.

If the pilots wanted to "accidentally " crash the drone without crashing themselves they did a good job considering the closure rate for the drone and aircraft are probably in excess of 400 knots at each pass.

Devil's advocate: It's difficult to ram something that small, especially when all your natural instincts tell you 'don't hit the thing'. So 19 passes isn't something to be ridiculed.

What is to be ridiculed is the fact that Russia is trying to argue that intentionally destroying US property is somehow an accident just because they didn't use bullets or missiles.

      Anonymous

      >It's difficult to ram something that small
Bruh. MQ-9 wingspan is 20-27 meters, Su-27 wingspan is 14 meters.
It is TWICE bigger than russian jet.

        >very high aspect ratio wings means it's HUGE
Come on. The drone has wings that are sp thin and long that it's almost glider tier. The Su-27 meanwhile is a notably bloated b***h closer in size to an F-111 Aardvark than something like an F-16.

Suckprostitutes are all massive planes because the Russians have lost the ability to actually engineer things. Can't find a pic that really compares the Su-27 and MQ-9 at scale, so here's a Sukhoi next to an F-16 to illustrate how fricking moronicly big it is.

Keep in mind that the Su-27 was designed to be a heavy, high performance (your milage may vary) counter-air fighter in the same way that the F-15 was. If you look at the lighter MiG 29 for example, it's much closer in size to the F-16. Also since Soviet/Russian aerial refueling was and still is subpar to put it politely, the Flanker series carries massive internal fuel tanks to extend the range out to something like 3'500 Km [1]. How the Su-35 performs with 11.5 tons of fuel weighing it down is another subject entirely though.

Possibly, could just as well be that they wanted to take a look at something else. We can only speculate based on this tiny amount of publicly available info. The MQ-9 didn't have a transponder on right? So it's entirely possible there are more surveillance aircraft in the area we can't see.
