Because they ditched the buffer assembly, it mitagated so much recoil that the AR became a world renowned weapon

Kind of fricking baller that we might be issuing every squad a coked up 240. m80a1 looked pretty fricking wicked, and this shit looks a lot worse if you end up eating enfilade fires at 75m.

It's one of the lightest rifles in it's caliber.

The M110A1 CSASS (the closest caliber and overall length rifle to compare to the XM5) is 15lbs with scope, ammo, and suppressor, and 8.4lbs unloaded, with no scope, and no suppressor.

The XM5 is 10lbs with a suppressor and expected to be around 13.5lbs with the scope and ammo. Still a good 1-1.5lbs lighter than the M110A1.

Sounds like the CSASS supressor needs to go on a diet then.

        Anonymous

Well it's using a 3–20×50 scope that weighs 2lbs which doesn't help, but the XM5's XM157 (1-8x LPVO with ballistic computer) optic is expected to similarly be around 2lbs

Like I said, it's the closest comparable rifle.

It's 7.62 with a ~2lbs scope, suppressor, 20 round mag, and has an overall length within 3/4 of an inch of the XM5.

        Anonymous

It's supposed to be to middle ground for 5.56 and 7.62

The m110 has a 20” barrel and the xm5 has a 13.5” barrel (rated for 2x the PSI), thats at least a lb right there

        Anonymous

        M110A1 has a ~16.3" barrel.

That's horrible for an infantry rifle, the M1 was lighter weight than this, and has a lot less recoil.

        Anonymous

        >the M1 was lighter weight than this
And it also had no scope and suppressor and only 8 rounds - what's your point?

        Anonymous

        >long as frick
        >way less ammo
        >lower power round
        >no scope
        >no suppressor

Really not sure why you think it's somehow relevant.

            Look again chief.

            >lower power round

That's a fact, 6.8x51 is going to be doing 80k+ PSI.

They had choices, but the military is notoriously bad at making those in matters concerning what equipment to issue.

Yes, since infantry is largely useless in modern war apart from physically manning checkpoints and providing security for intel and pipehitters, they needed something that can penetrate IV. Weight doesn’t matter because you don’t patrol on foot anymore

You’re an idiot bud, the us military is half the size it was 30 years ago and has the least foreign deployed since before ww1. There is zero (0) people doing foot patrols now and never will again. The American strategy going forward will be to pick a side and provide weapons and intelligence to them like we are doing with ukraine and taiwan. Bullet sponges need not apply

I worry that women won't be able to hold it up for very long before their arms get tired. They field tested these with women too, right? And not just Lena Miculek, she's had so much training she's too precious for the battlefield.
